Not 100% sure myself I know the other week I used the Swimming minnows (Gulp) and got constant hits on them until the tails were gone then nothin nudda. Put on a new tail bang back into it...admittidly it was KY's and one annoyed ray.
I kind of wondered if it was that predator type fish were more attracted by the lure action than anything else....can't explain the ray so maybe that shoots that theory in the foot................
Same with the unsented Lumo Shads/ Swimming mullet at night I don't get many hits when they are not charged up.....buggered if I know

I know what you're saying mate. action, colour, scent & size in no order I guess draws a fishes attention? but what if you took one of the above away- scent, would it make much difference?
a whiff of smell might fire up a fussy "individual" or turn a few on?

For my two cents worth
If you just doing a do nothing retrieve along the bottom for gurnard and the like, then maybe scented baits might make a bit of a difference as the wee timid beasties have time to actually smell them. For the rest of the time when your actually working a bait for pelagics, naa its the action that catches there eye, from what I have seen fish tend to bite 1st and ask questions second ie. see it, chomp it, spit or swallow ... etc etc.

That could explain why some of those Gulp craps on a ledger rig when fished in the rod holder have done well for some people, especially as they have a similar action to a brick .

I normally buy the non-scented ones so I can use them while out trout fishing. They seem to work well. I suspect the fish are attracted to the motion and looks of the thing, just like how they often strike a spinner.

i too have a lot of unscented sp which i was going to use for trout as well. i used the unscented ones up the coromandel and had no luck on them at all. it all changed once i started using the scented ones so now for salt water i will always use scented baits. the unscented ones also work well for trout.

Have not tried the unscented ones yet but agree once the tail gone then the bites cease (except for the bothersome reef fish!). How do the unscented ones go pricewise? Are there good alternatives to the Gulps that could save a man a few bucks?

We need an expert like finatic to grace us with pearls of wisdom ...
That said, I think it stands to reason that scent is one of the attractants to fish. Let's face it, berley without the scent of oil is as good as useless - and what attracts a snapper to a dead pilchard Bait? Scent.
I rest my case.

I do wander what Si's gonna do with 5 suitcases of the stuff, give half to me I reckon hehehe, but what about when the pillies and such go un-touched and non-scented soft baits get all the chicks? it happens plenty..
no sure answers. I love this game!

I wonder if baitfish let off a certain scent when they are scared or sick. They say dogs can smell fear so would the same apply to predatory fish ?

Gulps works bludy well, theres no doubt about that, but don't last long and are dam expensive. There not my first choice when I choose a plastic to use. My favourite lure has a mild salt and garlic scent! though I think its the action of the lure not the scent that makes it so succesful.
I pick them in this order most of the time.
Size, action, colour, scent, shape

When fishing in the deep and the baits are getting hit on the fall, what good is scent ??when fishing the wash most fish hit it real quick soon as she drops under the surface, what good is scent ..In my limited experience its the colour and action i go for..The fish under work ups will hit any thing, so i use a bright pink rubber that i got off Stormbringer they are strong as and out last the gulp bigtime.Another of stormbringers beauties is an anchovie replica that will go off in the BOP this summer i hope ...mmmm yellowfin on 14pd braid...So while i use gulp most of the time its not for the scent. Its for colour , action, and availability...( cod only stocks berkley )The only scent i need comes in a bag labled burley..and a bottle labled corona( with a dash of lemon)

Along that same theme Squid, what about colours ? Do they make a difference ?
I know those 'Hauraki Blue' Sluggos of Sharpies seem to be going off and flavour of the month at the moment . but does it make a difference or is it down to personal preference ???
Buggered if I know but just to be sure I'll take take a few wallets few of some odds and sods of some of Sharpies, some of Stormies and maybe a packet of the Nuke Chookies (just to be safe ).
What do people reckon about colour ?

good Q Moocha....
The ITM Fishing Show has done some U/W studies on just this topic that
will no doubt feature in nexts season line up but let's just say that
BLUE/WHITE combos appear to get the most attention from all
species....other colour schemes get noticed but just from our
observations at least the BLUE/WHITE deal gets their motors runnin'!

At a certain haunt of mine i spent a good 3 hrs playin with rat kings on the aforementioned colours ... they were fighting to get at it. .. musta caught 15 +. There were only a couple of legals amongst em that i caught but . . .
kingie aphrodisiac . .. fun . . . . pants on ... that kinda stuff
look forward to that show G

Nice one Drew Kingies on Bo!
nahh blues are rubbish, you fellas use something else.
They all get bit Mooch. Ive had a good sesh on dark brown of all colours and bright fanta orange. Its just my preference that I like the blue scheme the same as others are confident in the chooks etc.
Believe in your favourites and they will work, no matter the brand or colour
but yeah, blues are crap and we'll prove it in 3hrs time at snake city

What about the plastics that last all day without being destroyed, you put them back in the plastic bag, one with no juices to speak of , you take them out next day and they still work just as well.
I think the smelly stuff is to stop the baits drying out, and agree the action and movement is what does the trick.

Years ago I used to catch plenty of fish on Mister Twister lures, including one called a Sassy Shad, these worked very well and had no sent.
Soft plastics are not new they have been around for more than 20 years, I personally believe that that sent is unnessesary and the whole soft plastic thing is just being well marketed by the tackle industry that has huge comercial interest in promoting this, need to purchase new rods, lines reels etc.
Even go so far as to say that some of the very large snapper photos used in the promotion of soft plastic lures have had lures placed in their mouths just for the camera, have you ever seen the ones with out even a bite mark on the lure and the tails intact!

Dr. Fish....
Agree soft baits aren't new but have become popular again by
advancements in rods, reels, line and last of all lure techonology....remembering
that NZ has only just caught up with Aussie in the soft bait
revolution....5 years after but we are now catching lots of fish on
differnet "systems" and a system is what you need to fish soft baits
correctly....just like straylinning, jigging, marlin fishing or
catching sprats off the wharf...there are cross overs in tackle but
generally you need the right tools for the job....let's face it, Tiger
Woods has more than one club for different strokes he needs to make.
PS...we have caught some BIG snapper recently that have neither biten or damaged the tails.... ....there
are baits out there that are made to last and there is a way of rigging
them so minimal damage is done to the baits on the bite.....although can't speak
for all those involved in the soft bait industry and their ethics.

I'm a recent convert to SP's. It didn't make any difference yesterday
whether they were scented or not nor what style or colour. We got
Snapper, Kingfish, Terakihi, Golden Snapper, Blue Cod, John Dory,
Porae, Gurnard, Pigfish ( M&F) & Granddady Hapuka all on SP's
of different sorts.
My preference is the Slug-go 6" non scented range they are good for half a dozen fish before they eventually get destroyed - and they seem to get more than their fair share of big snapper.

Logic piglet - use logic - I know it may hurt for a while but
once the ol' cerebral cortex gets over the initial shock you'll be away
snorting - I suppose when the Marlin are on at Tutukaka instead
of going there you'll fish in lake Pupuke ?

Dr Fish,
As the skipper of Assassin and angler in some of the photos in the Berkley ads, I can confirm the fish were all caught on Berkley Gulp softbaits.
The baits in the mouth of the fish is what caught them. There was no bait or berley used or even on the boat.
If you don't have ethics with the top magazine writers on board and at all times it all comes back to bite you in the end.
We have a huge number of photos of large fish to show you, will post some when we have time, as we are out on the water teaching people to use softbaits everyday.
We have sold heaps of sofbait rigs over the summer and had very positive feedback form the anglers.
One customer sent his son in to tell us of the 22 pounder he caught on the first cast. We hear this this sort of feedback everyday. The photo from this fish is being sent to us.
Nothing staged about the average Jo Public buying the rigs and having great success catching the fish.
I agree with Kezza, if you are happy with the baits, you will catch fish.

Hi Dr fish
My name is Mark Phillips AKA Captain I am a writer photographer from Australia. I am also part of the Berkley pro team in Aus. I have been lucky enough to spend some time in your great country fishing and promoteing Berkley products and soft bait fishing in general. As an angler i grew up fishing in the ANSA sport fishing movement where honesty and morals came well before glory. I can assure you that any fish photographed thru the lense of my cameras was caught with whats hanging out of its gob. Most of the shots that Pure Fishing NZ have used to promote product in the past two years are my photographs. I take pride in the product and the companys I represent and fail to see any benifit in using smoke and mirrors to make things look better than they are for promotional means. Im sure site members such as Cod and Tiny will vouch for us as they were on board when many of these fish were boated, photographed and released. As a fisherman I to try and fish with other products to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, we have to do this to stay at the front of the pack. As a profesional I do not enter into slanging matches bagging other companies product, at the end of the day anglers are smart people and will buy what catches fish. Any way enough said, enjoy the summer boys, Gulp em up.
The Captain

The Juice in the packets of soft baits appears to be just like fish oil and the lure body, just a medium for holding and releasing this , providing the neccessary action. Simple science really.
I have trouble beleiving in some secret magic formula here.
Does any body else here think that the sent is derieved from plain simple old fish oil?
