I'm really just trying to beat Lethal for the latest at night posting. By 10:30 I had 3 nice kahawai in my bin all on my own flies. I tried bait (yellow eye mullet) and within 10 minutes I had another so I tried a smallish yellowtail ... an hour later I stuck on another yellow eye mullet and left the rod alone while I tried the flies again. I caught two more fish around the 4 lb mark. While I was cleaning the fish the set rod took off with what was easily the fish of the night .. looked 5lb plus ... it pulled out a good 40 metres of line on about a kilo of drag but it kept heading for cover and eventually wrapped around a pole and busted me off ... oh well...

Certainly nothing tonight that would win a kahawai contest but 6 good fish all filleted or ready for the smoker isnt too bad for a night aye.

It was soooo cold ....... why do I do it???

Hi smudge, I've never fished with flies at night, sounds productive, are you fishing from the shore or boat?

Yes very nice for the smoker.

From the shore snapa. The area is well lit at night and that is why the fish congregate there.

Hi there Smudge, went out on the Manukau today, got a few Kahawai and a trev, they were bloody great in the smoker. Just washing them down with the odd home brew or 6.

Good to hear form you slurry.

Good old home brew aye, I keep a few bottles on the hop, that way if you dont get any fish you can always eat the bait after a few beers...... just kidding!

Still trying to find a good consistent trev spot out there..... but it is hard to go past the winter gurnard.... I try to steer away from kahawai in the daytime as I can get my fill at night.

Was that bait, I enjoy new tastes but never can recall the next morning, I tried mako point again but only one small Gurnard, I was alittle inpatient today and moved to many times. I tried off grahams beach today, on the banks in about 15 feet, that's where most of todays fish came from. I just had a look at the chart, looks like some good ground in that area.

Braveheart

It weighed in at 3.25 kg not a bad kahawai for inner harbour.

I think I will go have a fish tonight...... must keep in practice .....

Well I headed off at 8:30 ... only a five minute drive or less to where I fish and the tide was a little further out than I expected and at dead low this spot doesnt fish well unless it is very late at night.

So I wasnt too confident ... i checked the line, and the 6 Lb line was a little frayed .... but why change it if there arent any fish???

A couple of casts came up with nothing and as Wefaknis said in his report, the water was really clear for the Manukau, in the 7 years I have fished it I have never seen it so clean .... I could see the bottom and that was at night, mind you was only a metre or two deep.

One last cast into the channel and I hooked on a nice kahawai around 4 lb ... bit of a worry with the frayed line so I treated it pretty carefully and landed it. I was really really really wishing I retied that knot and the suspense took maybe 10 more minutes off my life. All the talk in the forum about LBG for marlin is too much for me...I wouldnt handle the stress! I really hate losing any fish and with the amount I lose I should be over that by now...

A lovely night to be out fishing, will have another crack at it on Thursday weather permitting.

When is this kahawai king contest? Where do we get tickets? What size fish would normally take out first prize? So many questions ...anyone got any answers? I would imagine a winning fish would be 5 1/2 lb plus. Anyone beat the Huia Banks as a great kahawai spot? If the fishing starts at midnight I know where I will be starting from ....
