I was walking though the local weehee earlier today, and a Abu Garcia Sonar Tip (6-10kg) jumped off the shelf and into my hands. It told me that it did not want to be a warehouse rod any longer, and that it was discounted from $84 down to $50 (Much of the rods/reels were heavily discounted). Finally I gave in and carried it out of the store.
Now, I own a rod that I do not really have a use for. It is slightly to strong for trout, maybe kaiwhai. Can someone please suggest a reel to go with it, and a potential use? It seems quite nice with 10 fuji guides and a length of 1.8 meters. (I prefer threadline reels, I can,t stand bird ness) |

awesome what warewhare store was that at mate?
Have seen them at $84 and once wrongly priced at $48 - i kick myself i didnt buy it at $48

Good question.. now that I check it is a overhead version. So, I would need a decent quality overhead reel to go with it (preferably low-profile). I was considering getting a set-up to use to catch sea run trout.
Any thoughts on abu reels? The weehee had a few with serious discounts, I think including the Ambassadeur. Although not sure on the price or size. http://www.abu-garcia.com/cat.php?k=49995 |

Just went and grabbed me one of those rods Militaris for $44, great value
Funny thing is that they were not priced up at that, instead at the regular $84 - so had to wander over to the old price checker and make sure it was all good.
Its going straight into storage tho as going overseas for a while so wont be any fishing in the very near future ------------- LedgeNZ LBG |

Great rod you bought. I saw them at the Mt Wellington Warehouse for a similar price not long ago. Only some of them were that price and other's $84... think somebody had botched the pricing. ------------- What's the cheapest type of meat? Dear balls. They're under a buck. |

Yeah i remember you telling me finatic - i think those ones were botched pricing like you see but these ones are selling below cost (you can tell by the price as the last digit is a 7 ie 97cents - its a warehouse thing  )------------- LedgeNZ LBG |

Just respooled my old shimano tr200g with some 8kg and looks like will match me new lil rod nicely. now packed away nicely in the shed just begging to be used hmm maybe just one more fish this weekend... ------------- LedgeNZ LBG |

I had a old penn reel connected to mine, my dad left it next to the rubbish bin intending to throw it out. Several months/years later I spotted it, and brought it back into the shed. I was pratice casting with it (Never used a overhead reel before) and it seemed to cast and operate very well considering how it was treated. Although I could not cast any great distance casting from over my head, went a good distance when I did a side wise cast. Although got no over-runs. (My dad claimed it was a piece of back lashing  and only good for dropping sinkers of the side of a boat)
While casting my sinker got snagged several times in the grass allowing me to test the rod out. It seems to have a nice action. Now I only need to get a newer reel. |
