I had to go to the ALC in Dunners today ....time to kill so went to Portobello for another look ....last time we went to Port Chalmers , lot of water inbetween , and I cant help wondering what sort of fish ....if any one would catch in the Otago harbour . Twas a lovely day no wind ,water like glass and we only saw one guy with a surf caster , no boats . Do you need to go out of the harbour to get fish ? . Looks floundery , gurnard or even a Kahawai ?

Salmon. At the right time of year, Don't ask me when that is. I have mates down there who go out for them.

Many years ago they had a hatchery/release programme for salmon in the hrbr. So they return to spawn each yr.
It can be quite good apparently. I am guessing autumn for the salmon run.

I gotta go back there soon so I think I might pack some fishing gear and have a fling .
I will have to sit in the boat in the driveway and use the chart / gps to suss the bathymetrics ......my neighbour thinks I nuts 😁

You can view the bathymetry without sitting in your boat.  Use the zoom in, zoom out function.

Good on you McTool for giving it a go. Why does one need a licence to catch salmon in a lake or river but not open sea/harbour?? makes no sense to me they not a native fish

Thats the best pressie I have had for a while . I know its me but every time I went looking for charts like this I got bits of them or I couldnt zoom in without loosing so much image quality they were useless .

I guess its location , I dont mind having to buy a licence for lakes and rivers because I can see the good that is done with the money . I think that there will be a day when we will have to pay to fish in the sea and tbh I wouldnt mind paying a bit if it went towards really stomping on peeps who flout the size and take limits.....Im not into hanging but I think repeat or blatant offenders get off way to light.😁
