On Saturday I helped out with the running of a spearfishing competiton with a difference.

The focus was was on fun, education and cooking. We did this by:
1. pairing experienced spearos with newbies
2. only one fish of each species could be weighed
3. Nearly 30 species on the target list so fishing pressure was spread over many species
4. high-grading was discouraged as there were minimal points for additional weight i.e. they were better off focussing on getting another species rather than shooting a larger kingfish (if they already had one)
5. we organised space on a boat for competitors that needed a ride (I took a few out on my boat)
6. half the points came from the spearfishing part of the day
7. half the points came from cooking their catch
8. the cooking section needed them to prepare:
     a) one raw dish
     b) one "whole fish" dish
     c) one cooked dish
9. Cooking was judged by the other competitors and based on criteria like presentation, meeting the brief, the wow factor, taste etc.

The bloke organising it actually wrote an app that allowed folks to submit photos and weights of their fish (for verification) and pics of dishes. It also allowed everyone to score the cooked dishes. This actually worked really well!

I somehow agreed to be weighmaster - so had scales on my boat - but the high trust model meant that teams could weigh on their own boats and take pictures so the weighmaster role was really just reviewing pictures posted and I didn't need to call anything out that looked dodgy.

The app also tracked the boat assignments and I was happy about this as I also ended up being Competition Director so had boats checking in with me as they arrived at the start triangle etc. (It was a swim comp so all competitors had to swim from the same place).

We ended up with 13 teams competing (some with 1 experienced spearo coaching 3 newbies) and the dishes the folks prepared were awesome!  I will load some pictures at some stage.

If you were round Tiri on Saturday morning you may have seen a group of boats with dive flags flying to the east of Wooded Island and 13 float boats (with flags) around the coast (and out of the HPA!).
