A novel idea by fisheries. Who knows what reccs take is,no point in B/Sing it as it can only be beneficial to us??

National Research Bureau recreational trial

Tēnā koe

Fisheries New Zealand’s biggest recreational fishing survey, the National Panel Survey, is undertaken by independent research company The National Research Bureau (NRB) every 5-6 years.

NRB are in the process of exploring new ways to conduct this research ahead of the next National Panel Survey in 2027/28 or 2028/29 and are looking for people who would like to take part in this important work. This trial is being independently undertaken by NRB, and data collected is solely for the purpose of determining if a new email questionnaire would be more efficient, while continuing to provide robust information on recreational marine fishing activity throughout the country.

The trial will be undertaken over the course of the next summer fishing season, and Fisheries New Zealand encourages members of our recreational fishing community to take part.

If you choose to participate, once enrolled, you will receive an email every Sunday night from October onwards with a link to a short questionnaire about any marine fishing you’ve done over the previous week. If you haven’t fished, you will be able to answer ‘no’ to the first question. If you have fished, the questionnaire should take less than five minutes.

NRB have developed a practice questionnaire which you can find here:  https://govt.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5865438dbf58d52c251962cdf&id=8e1dce4810&e=f75deb9a86" rel="nofollow - nrbnz.questionpro.com/fishingpractice . The practice questionnaire shows what you will be asked about your fishing (or diving/gathering) activity, and you can take it as many times as you want so you know what to expect.

To enroll in the trial, head to  https://govt.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5865438dbf58d52c251962cdf&id=24230a15e8&e=f75deb9a86" rel="nofollow - nrbnz.questionpro.com/enrolment  where you’ll be asked for some quick information about you as well, including your contact details. It will take about a minute. Enrolments will be open until October 10th, after which time you will receive the weekly Sunday questionnaire emails.

You are also welcome to forward this email onto anybody else who you think may be interested, it is not exclusive to the members of this mailing list.

We appreciate the time and effort of everyone who contributes to this trial to make data collection for recreational fishing as accurate and efficient as possible.

If you have any further questions, please email Andreas at NRB ( mailto:[email protected]" rel="nofollow - [email protected] ) who is leading this work, collecting data, and will be your point of contact.

I for one will not be doing it. Can just see me reporting a very poor catch return and all of a sudden, the limit is 3 fish as clearly the fishery is under pressure.

Or I have a good run and limit out for a few days and........... The limit is now 3 fish as clearly the fishery is being over fished, or recs have been catching more than their quota or.....

I do not trust them not to twist any data they get to suit their agenda

THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF FISHERMAN, THOSE WHO FISH FOR SPORT AND THOSE THAT CATCH SOMETHING.

This is exactly what is wrong with recreational fishes, your happy that commercial record their catches even though many recreational critise their data yet your not happy to have the same critism leveled back.
The likes of liegasea and others can say what they like but the recreatioanl catch is not truely known, it is at best a calculated guessimate.

NIWA Chief Scientist Richard O’Driscoll says it is really important that we know how many fish are being taken out of the ocean.

"This includes the recreational catch, which in some areas is as high or higher than the commercial take for species like snapper and blue cod. Our interviews, with the help of recreational fishers, provide the information needed for effective management of inshore fish stocks."

Just a thought.
At the moment the charter boat I assist on is required to  complete a fish return for each trip.
By logging into an app at the commencement of each trip the app will record the date, location,( GPS coordinates) the time spent fishing etc...
When we are back at the wharf, we have to count and log in the following .....total number of fish caught, total number of fish kept, the total weight of fish kept, the number of people fishing etc.

Unless they exempt those recreational fishermen ( Fisherpersons for those of you that are woke) who go on charters, I can see that there will be a double up of statistics which could give a false inflated indication of fish stocks.
Hopefully they have thought of this...........but I wont hold my breath..
