Yesterday Keith C and I had a noteworthy day on the salt, fishing the Auckland East Coast Bays. For the first part of the match day we fished the outgoing. Conditions were perfect - flat sea with just a hint of ripple and overcast. Very slight wind with the tide. The playing surface looked like this:

Almost from kickoff we started to get a few keepable snapper. A few throwbacks too, but enough well into the 30's to make it worthwhile. Then this guy showed up around half time:

So after 3 hours and the tide having turned we went looking for another spot. The second half of the match was played on the incoming with a field that looked like this:

Then these guys started showing up:

There was a ton of bait on the sounder all day although very few birds around and no workups. Prospecting with the sabiki rig brought up plenty of good yellowtail mackerel and even a reasonable-sized blue mackerel. We also had a livebait deployed all day but nothing showed any interest in that.
Still, by fulltime we had a good score:

Picture distorts things a bit but the smallest snap  in the pic was 33cm

Thanks for a great game today Keith - you get player of the match prize.

Thanks for the day Paul. Worth the trip up from the 'Naki.

To add, we enjoyed sashimi of blue mackerel and jack mackerel last night. Both were well worth the effort to bleed and put on ice immediately.

Out from Whangaparaoa today for a very disappointed trip only 3 small ones. Blowing a stiff cold southerly all day, no kahawai or bait fish. The old southerly strikes again.
