Hi all, Maybe my last post-Suggestions Ideas has contributed to a bit more activity on the Forum I dont know but there  seems to be a few more catch reports and general posts in all topics since. Wotever its great to see and read!On to the fishing, My Summer Snap fishing in general was not as good as the last few years. Went a couple of months or so were the 20lb plus fish weren't there. Caught alot in the 5-7 kg size. Wasn't until three odd weeks ago iv been getting a few again. And one a 10.64 kg came just at the right time with days to spare in a couple of Comps i was in to win first prize...
On to a story I thought you might enjoy! Back in my day I was pretty handy with a pool cue. I still have a dabble every now and then down at the local pub. Some nights I'm crap then others i play all right still. Its the long shots as im now in my mid sixties that are useless now! Our best Female Player-Hinga offered me a challenge. First to win five games! The prize a trip on my little boat for Hinga to target a big Snap if she won and mine a nice crispy $50 note. Me with my competitive nature jumped on it! She kicked my arse, so the trip was on!
Hinga loves here fishing and goes out on numerous boats out of Mokau with friends, and like alot of anglers dreamed of getting her first 20 lb snap. The day was perfect, launching a breeze with flat seas. We got into bait catching mode to use on

the Straylines straight away. It was all new to her as she had only ever ledger rig fished out deep. I set up for her two Straylines and once baited said cast as far as you can off the boat! She was great and they zoomed out then set the drags once on the bottom. I was first to get a Snap around 6kg I let go. She couldnt believe it as it was around her pb.  I Said to Hinga we are after alot bigger ones than that! A few more like that and one smaller over the next hour or so Hinga got the knack of it, then that familiar noise of a screaming drag took off on one of her reels! I guided her through wot to do and the next minute she's hooked up to I knew a big Snap! Super exited Hinga sat back and started playing it in perfect. With net in hand I was first to see it and once netted i said I think youv'e caught ya first 20lb da! Her excitement, animation etc was amazing to see! We had half an hour or so after she caught messaging and talking to her friends. We both agreed lets head in get it weighed and show her friends. It was just shy of the twenty pound mark, came in at 8.78kg. It didnt matter to Hinga it smashed her pb and she was over the moon! Im going to take her out again to put her on a bigger one in the future.. The Pic of her isnt the best i had to screen shot it off messenger to be able to load it on here. The other one  the 10.64kg I mentioned.
Cheers All..

Thats a great effort. Are you fishing over foul? and what depth do you normally target?

Thanks for the post Geoff.  Think I will need to give the smelly old crap a few run-outs: mostly i just use SPs and seems like the big ones are elsewhere.  Keep the reports coming please

Thanks Guys for the awesome replies!! Its given me my mojo back for the Forum!! A couple of answers to questions- all my straylining is over sand which I prefer. My go to depth is 18 to 20meters, but will go in to 10 to 12 meters if not much is happening after three to four hours which happens occasionly. On the smelly old crap-Baits! Thats probably why it doesn't work for ya. Catch fresh out there every trip....Its the number one priority! You will hardly get e'm on old bait. And on the first day of  Hirepool Baitmates April measure  Comp today i got out with my brother but not for that long as it got to big for the little Mac Boat! The Snaps  had just started hitting our straylines as well!  I picked up a good opener though  21lbs 80.5cm and Mick got a 70cm. Crap weather and sea now for a while, might be ages till next trip. Great posts, you're making me want to go back to bait fishing again too, 10+ years of soft baits and playing with my food on 4lb silly string. The last 20lb I caught would have at Great Barrier 8 years go, was on a soft bait but it has been a long time between drinks. Better dig out my trustee TLD15 and Kilwell Jellytip..............

Thanks Salty! Love me Jelly tips, prefer the older ones. have four of them but the spin version. I know Zilch about targeting big Snaps with softbaits but Rob Parker fishing out of Hohoura catches them on most trips using softbaits. He would be the man to ask for info for anyone interested..Beer
