Has anyone had this fall out? Its the pin that goes through tilt ram and tilt tube. Mine fell out or snapped.There last week gone this week. Wondered why the gauge wasnt reading. Fitted a tempary bolt to see if tilt gauge was the problem but works with bolt so will fit correct pin Monday.
Have located a new pin from prompt parts $16 pick up or $20 couriered

Very common, main reason why they break off is because the bushes on either side that the through pin runs into get tight on the through pin so it can’t rotate and snaps the trilobe pin off
I had the same problem couple of months back and replaced the bushes prompt parts have them as well, at the same time. Not a big job just punch the old bushes out with a socket, just don’t grease or oil the bushes just apply some grease to the through pin. Make sure you drive the trilobe pin well or it will fall out again.
Good time to check the back of the trim motor housing, prone to rusting, I coated mine with lanolin grease.

Kandrew is there a secret to knocking the pin in?? Got tube out,seems easy enough to put in with new bushes.

Tilt motor all the way up, start the pin off with a hammer, but then I like the use a steel punch so you can see your driving the trilode pin in straight. These pins are only made to go in once. If you take it out, you will need a new one.

Probaly the original 20 yrs old,dont last forever,think its 180hrs now,put on 75hrs in 18 months so plenty of life left..

Probaly the original 20 yrs old,dont last forever,think its 180hrs now,put on 75hrs in 18 months so plenty of life left.. |
Yes not the best design Ive seen merc come up with, my trim gauge was stuck hard up. They just fall out often as well.
But check that trim motor end cap, they rust out all the time. Water gets in and hello no trim and tilt. I’m will need to take mine off next year and give it a anti rust treatment. They hold the permanent magnets so they are made out of mild steel.

trim motor gets a regular spray with a water repellent CRC product.No rust so might be working?

Had same issue and tilt pin workedout enough to suffer bend last year, no stock in country of pin so made one from stainless rod, threaded hole and loctited machine screw instead of pin, temp fix thats likely to remain permanent

4 left in stock at promt parts,The guy said they have a habit of falling out,suggested as temp fix threaded bolt n nut. Got it in ,no new bushes as non in stock.

Think I have worked out why pin broke. Have a support arm when on the road and might of been pulling trim down to hard? Saw a motor drop today in matamata,owner carried on despite flashing lights,he eventually stopped after a motorbike got in front and braked.
