Hi all after eight odd weeks of rough seas here in Mokau today finally produced a day where i could take the little Mac out again and slay some Snaps!I was chomping at the bit on the beach at daybreak, to be greeted by a half meter swell Was out to me spot in no time, deployed two bait lines and two Straylines with old frozen Kahawai fillets to get me going. They attracted bugger all, until i landed two big Barracouta's on the bait lines! Staight down with half fillets on each strayline rig and within ten minutes I caught my first Snap. nice fat one around 8kg. Next few hours I caught half a dozen six kg plus ones with maybe one 20 lbda amongst them. pulled pin shortly after lunch as i was a bit knackered from not been out for a while. .This time of year like every year you here advise like head out to sixty meters on the west coast for the best Snapper fishing. I scratch my head, thinking why would you go ten miles out wot ever it is when the fish are in close this time of year. Sure you might hit the odd school of big spawners and get one on a ledger rig but nine times out of ten you wont. If your after small snaps thats fine, they are in all depths. If your after a big one or in a competition the way i look at it, once you have gone out past a depth where you cant Strayline as its to deep and your lines end up back under the boat etc you cut your odds down by 90% the other 10% is getting lucky on a ledger rig. When Im in a Comp watching 99% percent of the boats heading out deep I know ive got them beat already for biggest Snap. It sounds big headed but ive hardly ever lost a Snapper competition, and enjoy passing my knowledge on to others through this Forum. I meet alot of adult men been fishing all there lives for a 20 lb Snap and havent caught one. The ones ive helped achieve this through a change in methods i get great pleasure being able to help out and seeing them acheive there goal A pic of a few of todays Snaps before friends came around and took them home,Cheers...
