Good afternoon,

As the subject states I’m going to be in Christchurch for work a couple weeks in October and I’m trying to figure out what fish are worth targeting in the area and what methods would be best suited for them. I’m an experienced fisherman but mainly fish freshwater in the U.S. I'm planning on bringing 9 1/2 foot and 6 1/2 foot MH spinning rods with 5000 and 3000 series reels. I’ll also have a box of micro jigs and tackle to fish with bait.

With all that being said what would be some fish and fishing methods that would be worth looking into in that area? I’m open to picking up new tackle but I’m planning on sticking with the rods I already have. Table quality isn’t a big factor for me, I’m mostly looking to have some fun after work and check off some new species.

As a freshwater guy from across the world, it’s been a little bit tough to figure out where to start so I’d really appreciate any advice to point me in the right direction!

Welcome sir. I'd try casting from one of the river mouths for kawahai, they are loads of fun. I've not done much fishing in the south island but kahawai are a great sporting fish on light tackle. They can be prolific

In that area, I would be thinking about trout fishing in freshwater and hiring a guide.
