To all those people who rushed out and paid megabucks for Avet reels, seduced by the Gold colour.

The same ones who are now finding out what everyone else already knows - that all that glistens is not gold, and corrosion and drag problems are well known with these reels.

Ya shoulda stuck with 225LDs, boys.

Never let it be said that I dont do my investigating........

From Mr Watson

well we all know that a feature of the ITM Fishing Show is the underwater footage and the filming of the underwater footage has for the most part been filmed by me. So it was with some surprise that I noticed Kerren pick up the underwater camera while I was fishing.but Kezza wasnt too keen on getting into the 11 deg water so instead he leaned over the side with celly in top pocket what followed was  plopFark..that was my farken phone all on board refrained from laughing at the large tattooed guy who I tried to help vent and get it out of his system as it was early in the trip.

...what a complete load of "cods" wollop.

I was actually showing the Southlanders how to create their own version of TAS Reef...damn neighbourly of me I thought.

'Luckily' I had only recently upgraded phones and still had the old one, so the contacts could be copied over to the replacement phone easily...would have been a complete bunch of arse otherwise....see there is a silver lining there somewhere....expletive expletive!!

you'll keep Randell & Co.

I own an Avet SX bought after some consultation with members of this site in http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=31&TopicID=12013&SearchPagePosition=1&search=8kg+setup&searchMode=allwords&searchIn=Topic&forum=31&searchSort=dateDESC&ReturnPage=Search">this thread.

Thanks Bender and "everyone else who already knows" as I dont recall anyone posting anything about corrosion or drag problems when I was considering what to buy. And now you come out with this.

If the problems with these reels were so "well known" then why didnt someone say something at the time?

Boz...

Caveat Emptor

I just did a basic Google search on AVET reels and alot of comments made by those that have been using them of different forums around the world are not overly flattering...warranty? or shell out a few bucks and get your reel looked at now...even if you have a good one it would be preventitve maintenance and piece of mind at the least?

....guess folk are worried about potential law suites etc if their posts are construde as liable and because AVET is reasonably new on the market here in NZ, no one would have had a lot of hands on experience with the product....will PM you one of the discussion forums fyi!

I didn't know then and was veeeery tempted to join the mass exodus. But I asked myself the question - is there anything, apart from a sexy colour, that an Avet would give me that my Penn 525 mag doesn't?

Couldn't justify the expense. Since then there has been quite a lot on the hull truth site about bearings dying through sale water ingress and corrosion.

BTW - Boulder recommended a couple of inexpensive alternatives on that thread and you didn;t listen to him did you (even though hes done plenty if fishing and owns three of every reel ever made)?

Interesting alright... Wonder how a reel brand gets such a good reputation if it's ain't all that.

Nah, nominate them all for the award anyway

In all honesty, if a reel is serviced regularly, just how shonky can it be? Mind you, I guess they only have to let you down once on the wrong fish and there's many tears.

In truth, one day (when the boat's paid for) I know I'm going to have to part with '$$$ X heaps' to buy some game reels. It will be a very long decision-making process with many trials and much consultation. But, when I've parted with the money, the decision will be mine and mine alone, if I missed a piece of advice I've only got myself to blame.

That MakoMatt knows what he's talking about.

Beagle - when you need kit, just borrow Bushies. He won't mind lending it to you because it belongs to Billfish.

Don't worry Bender, FishB8 and I have "an arrangement".

No no no, get your mind out of the gutter... it's a fishing arrangement and it works very well for a boat owner who has no game gear and a game fisherman who has no boat.

Point taken Bender. I guess I liked the styling of the Avet and at that stage had seen nothing but good remarks about them. Perhaps I should take this as a warning to fully check out all new gear before I buy in future.

BTW - Boulder mentioned a TLD10 which are basically like hens teeth and a non-lever drag reel, not what I wanted. Also I didnt know then that Boulder  has done "plenty of fishing, owns three of every reel ever made and is also a tight as a snappers bum with his money"

Cheers Kezz, definately a few bad comments bout the Avets in that other forum. Will most probably take my Avet for a service in the near future. Can anyone recommend someone reliable??

And Beagle you may be onto something there with that nominating business

1: Boz - when you pay as much for a reel as an avet and so carefully engineered as an avet ... you expect a rolls royce. That is what they promise. So you shouldn't have to be careful.

2: Boulder - you were supposed to be at work and not notice this unprovoked cheap shot at your good self. Christ now I owe you a few beers.

3: Mmmmm Japanese schoolgirls.

I nominate Bender for the first post in this thread. He posts that and tries to come across as all knowing when he is doing it from hindsight. Admitts in a later post that he would have brought one if he wasnt as tight as a fishes bum.

Just like Penns 975LD, the price tag on that piece of sh*t is just shocking! they promised a Bently so I guess your comment Bender on being careful is true.

And your point is? Should I pretend to not know? Ring ring .. its either the pot phoning the kettle or the wedding planner at your front door.

Squiddy - yep Penn made the same mistake with the little goldies.

Perhaps I missed a comma. I meant the TLD10 was rare and the other reel Boulder recommended was non-lever drag

An observation worthy of some merit Mr Schumway, good stuff. I still can't believe Squid could remember Gordon Schumway... but that's a little off the point I guess.

Or Ohsif might like to mention casting his entire rod and reel into the drink......

My abu outfished a few other flash reels in the weekend.......we could elaborate on that a little too if needed
