Hi everyone- first time poster from Oz. Heading to Auckland for work next week and staying in Viaduct Harbour. Time really limited and only have an hour spare a couple of times during the week but is it worth bringing a travel rod and throwing some small metal slugs and soft plastics in the harbour - would hate to miss out on any opportunity to cast a line in NZ, however brief! Any advice gratefully accepted!

I've not seen anyone fish there and likely to be boats tied up. About a 10m walk and you are on the breakwater leading into Westhaven Marina. People fish there and catch fish, that would be my pick. Have a look on google. Good luck.

You can fish at the end of the main wharf in the city, the one on which the cloud and ferry building are located. I have seen John Dory, snapper & kahawai caught there. So yes, bring your tackle.

There are lots of big parore/luderick at the Viaduct, so if that's your thing...

Squid fishing at night is also popular - not necessarily in the viaduct Harbour - but on the outer breakwater

No disintegrations!

Keith C's suggestion is an excellent one. As mentioned, regulars off the end of Queens Wharf catch snapper at this time of year. It gets crowded, because some people use up to 6 rods, but just force your way in.
I'm pretty sure fishing isn't allowed in the Viaduct and off some of the other wharves, or at Westhaven marina - so you will probably get approached by a security guard if you are conspicuous.
