Looking to find cheaper ways to fish as now a 1kg bag of squid is costing $15. Recently learnt about slow pitch jigging and it looks promising. Only limiting factor is I am stuck around Limestone island which isn't very deep, bottoms out at around 20m on a high tide in a hole. Is it still possible to use this method or is it best to stick to bait?

Also do I need to by a new rod and reel or would I get away with it on a normal rod?

Cheers

I do a lot of jigging out of Whangarei Harbour, but have limited success with softbaits and jigs inside the harbour. Other people seem to do OK, so feel free to ignore me, but I do think the environment is better suited to bait fishing. That said, I'd use a microjig and cast ahead of the drift just like a soft bait if I was determined to catch a fish on a lure. This has worked for me in the past with snapper and trevally. As much as I like jigging, you wouldn't have to lose many jigs to get up to $15.

You could buy a bait net and catch your own, they come up on trademe at a cheap price or you could get yourself a 4in gill net and set it for mullet kahawai and snapper.

Is microjigging different to slow pitch jigging? Also do you lose a lot of jigs?

Yeah i do all right with the sabiki catching mackerel for bait. Lots of nibblers at the moment that clean out your bait quick.

Yes, completely different equipment and jigs. A budget softbait outfit capable of casting 28g would get you started with microjigs. It would also be good for softbaiting.

I don't lose many jigs because I'm generally fishing over sand/mud. I can imagine there are a few more snags around in the upper harbour.
