Hi all, long story short the time has come to repower my V146. I had a 1990 2 stroke Yamaha 70HP (rebuilt 2012 and has now done its dash).
I recall in the 70's to 80's I saw the odd one with the old V4 Johnson outboard, so it seems they can handle the weight and power and there are plenty around with 90HP 2 stroke outboards which they seem happy with.
As brief background, I usually use the boat for fishing inner harbour Manukau/Waitemata (3 - 4 max pob) although have gone offshore to Hen and Chicks from Whangarei in the past - but that would be an outer limit for me. Also, the boat is garaged and space is very limited to go a lot bigger in terms of outboard dimensions - newer tech seems to be smaller which is a bonus on that front!
Just wondering what anyone is running 4 stoke wise on these as they are I expect a bit heavier than a comparable 2 stroke. Power to weight makes me wonder what I should be considering in a 4 stroke HP wise before I start looking at what's available to buy and budget/timeline. Of course with the hull and trailer circa 45 years old, I am wary of a big spend repowering an aging vessel.
