So being the smart fella I am I done brought a 15-24kg 5.6 boat rod thinking I can catch everything from small fish to big fish,but never thought about the sensitivity needed for smaller fish that I will mostly likely be targeting. Has anybody used a big rod for smaller fish ,is it a waste of time and should I buy another 4-6 kg rod? |

It will catch fish but it wont be fun to use, small rods catch big fish up to a point but say a soft bait rod in 300mwont cut it. If you are fishing for kings and hapuku and stuff like that you will need that 24kg setup, You can catch those fish on light gear too but the odds are generally in the fish' favour. If you are say fishing for trevally in 5m you will find the heavy gear much harder to use. Many people use one set of gear for everything they do however and would generally have a 15kg rod with a big spin reel probably something like you have. It will work, just not the kind of fishing that suits me. Luckily not everyone else is like me. ------------- Best gurnard fisherman in my street |

| Anything will work, hand lines do for example, it just won't be much fun and you may lose some smaller fish due to the stiffness of your heavier setup. Assuming you're bait fishing, a standard 6-10kg setup will cover a lot of bases. A 6-8kg setup or even lighter setup would be more fun if circumstances allow. |

Having caught a big Snapper oon liht gear (10 lb Okuma rod, Baitcaster and 10lb braid, drag tuned by ReelRepairGuy ®️, you can catch big fish on light gear, but if you’re after average fish on a 24kg rod…..bit of a stiff stick without finesse and presumably heavy line? N+1. One ‘cannot’ have too many rods…..even jus a light 6-10 Kg set would cover the bases better.  |

My take on the amount of rods ( and guns ) one has is that they are like golf clubs .......ones no #ucking good , ya needs a whole set 😁 ------------- I wish I was young again .... Id be heaps smarter than this time |
