Hi guys what's the general consensus on what brand 150hp is the best and what is the best value for money.
I have a 5.8 Surtees with a Yamaha 115hp but find its a little underpowered.
Do a reasonable amount of offshore fishing based in Tairua run a 2kw through hull transducer and 2 x Simrad MFD screens and find that the 115 also doesn't really keep up with the charging of battery with all my goodies on board.
Whats everyones thoughts.
Kind regards Brian

I have same hull as you, yamaha all day for me.

Will be the old holden/Ford discussion. These days all the four strokes are the same, suggest it will be who your local agent is for servicing etc.

Keep us posted on your decision.

The 150 pushes hull nicely.

I know there have been many issues with Suzuki 140's causing a resonance with some hardtops, I'd check that out if you went the Suzuki way. Lots of people say good things about Mercury these days

If you are looking at the yamaha I suggest you Google yamaha 150 harmonic balancer issue. My one cost me alot of $ to repair. I am pretty sure there was a class action claim against yamaha over this issue in the US. I think yamaha was replacing them at cost in the US but yamaha NZ was denying any knowledge of the issue when my one **** itself. That was the second yamaha I had issues with. The 3 outboards I have now are no longer yamahas.

We repowered with a slightly smaller (100hp) outboard a couple of years ago and I tried to park my historical personal bias and take a more pragmatic approach and weigh up the following sort of factors - yes I admit it, I threw them in a basic spreadsheet.

In no real order:
  • Local dealer reputation
  • Warranty
  • Weight
  • Displacement
  • Is the model at the top of the horsepower rating for that particular block? I like the idea of a less stressed engine
  • Fitted price after trade in
  • Service costs - perhaps hard to pick but we ended up with a maintenance free valve train
  • Reputation of the particular model we were looking at - suspect all brands have their rippers and their dogs
Ended up with a brand I wouldn't have touched with a barge pole 20 years ago and nearly 2 years in it's done exactly what it says on the tin - long may it continue.

Thanks much appreciated will keep posted on final choice. Suspect I may have opened a can of worms though.

Performance

The review boat was fitted with the Suzuki 115hp four-stroke, and this seems perfectly matched to this hull. We powered away from the Takapuna boat ramp, and the hull lifted quickly on the plane. The flooding keel emptied so quickly it was not even felt, and we were able to put the hammer down. In rough conditions where extra stability is required, the water ballast tank can be filled then shut.

With two adults aboard and a full tank of fuel the boat easily reached 32 knots. Thanks to the Garmin GMI 10 digital gauge, which integrates to the Suzuki's NMEA2000 outputs, we were able to view boat speed, engine RPM, engine temperature, engine hours, charging voltage, fuel remaining, fuel consumption and the engine's trim angle.

Dropping the throttle to just under 5000rpm, we were still achieving 27 knots and fuel consumption was showing under 23 litres per hour - around 0.85 litres per nautical mile. This would give a range in excess of 150 nautical miles, depending on conditions and load.

Maybe get your regulator checked for outpiut charge rate??

Mines a 5.8 Hardtop fully tricked out. Has 24v water snake bow motor, Cannon Digital troll down rigger, bait tank tuna tubes 2kw airmar r111 LM chirp transducer which I have set up as a through hull 1kw transom TM265 hwl
I have a rocket launcher that takes 12 rods as like I say to people that ask if I have enough rods do you play golf with one club? Also have a small tackle shop onboard most of the time.
with the extra batterys and electronics lights pumps stereo etc battery struggle and find I'm having to leave engine running 115 charges at 35amps max 150hp charges at 50+
If fishing at night which I do a lot motor doesn't  bring batterys back up unless I keep it running most of time.
My 115 is due for replacement so that why I thought id go to 150 extra amps extra grunt.Extra grunt is about getting better fuel efficiency and out of trouble ie bars ect when needed. Just need to decide Yamaha Honda Suzuki Mercury. will probably fit a perma trim in order to get low speed planing. Had one on a centre console with a Tohatsu made a significant difference in rough weather with low speed planing and fuel efficiency.
Trouble with reviews they are predominantly in fair weather. Phew!!!
