Hey everyone,

Wondering if we have any gun makers on here?

Would be cool to see some custom gun builds and also share ideas and test results.
Maybe even meet up if someone has a pool and do some shooting practice!

I myself have made a couple guns starting from an ambitous timber double roller as a first gun then onto multiple different arangements of rollers, then comming back to conventional two bands. I am now making guns straight out of carbon fiber.

I think it would be cool to have good database of spearguns used in nz and design specific custom gun that meet our conditions, so please upload some pics and share some ideas!

Here is my 2 band full carbon 110 with 85cm of band stretch 14mm small id bands at 350 percent stretch 7mm spear. full custom carbon body with carbon handle. needs alittle bit of balancing to finish it off but hopefully will be an easy swingable snapper snooping weapon. 

do you think a reel is mandatory for snopping?

Im no spear fisher well the odd flounder 🥴 but that’s impressive work you have done there. How did it work out $$$ wise? Worth making or buying?

Hey reel, $$ wise if you have the knowledge and the gear why not! me personally i did not have the gear but wanted to learn about composite techniques so was a good project to take on. 

dont know the exact cost break down but a list of things needed is something like,

(off the shelf)
spear
trigger
bands
dyneema

(hand made)
body 
handle
muzzle

If someone wanted to make one out of wood (highly recommend for first project) you could buy all the off shelf parts top quailty for around 350ish buy some hardwood and go at it (assuming you have wood working tools). With wood you could also laminate with epoxy and finish with epoxy but thats another added cost.

I have no idea about spearguns but I always admire those with a DIY streak. It looks pretty cool to me.

wow, that is an impressive built. I made two guns so far and have access to a wide range of tools, but unfortunately not a lot of time nowadays. https://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/lockdown-woodie-project_topic135841.html" rel="nofollow - Here you can see my lockdown project i still use on most dives. I have quite a bit of hardware lying around (bit of a hoarder and always stocking up when overseas). Keen on seeing your roller, post some pics please!

Wow that gun you made is extremely nice! Handle is a masterpiece. How is everything holding up on the gun any issues anywhere? What other parts are yah hoarding anything exotic like that flopper 😄 I'll upload my roller soon.

Carbon roller

Running 16mm bands at around 350 percent 7mm hunt shaft ermes double roller mech full carbon body muzzle and handle muzzle is my own design with forged carbon side plates rollers are 3d printed with ceramic bearings.

Probably the nicest shaft I have ever had with the ermes mech everything is very smooooooth.

The body shape I have designed is made for a roller so the bands lay very nice inside grooves on the underside of the gun

wow, that gun is a work of art. I have a handful of Ermes double roller trigger and the pulleys with the ceramic bearings still lined up for some gun in the future. Also some wacky C4 rubber, can't wait to see how that goes. My next one I'm planning to get cut with a cnc, but I need to get better in fusion first. Time is not on my side....
Can you tell a bit more about your carbon gun? Did you vacuum form it? What core? And what diameter do the muzzle roller have? I've had an invictus inverter in my hand the other day, there are sooo may cool details, but will probably vaporise any fish shot with, haha

The ermes double roller mech are so so very nice. the ceramic pulleys are for inverted roller?

You can see the mould off to the right of the pictures its the white thing.
Method i used was wet lay vacuum bagging in a mould. Because i use a mould i dont have an internal core only stiffeners at certain position to help transfer load from top skin to bottom skin. When i lay the carbon i always make sure to know what the gun will be as an inverted roller will need more reinforcement on the top of the gun while a conventional gun will need more on the bottom, a roller can be even top and bottom. The muzzle roller diameter is different for most of my guns as when i drill the holes it can be up or down a couple mm. I make them big enough so the rubbers dont rub on the body but small enough that the rubber line up nicely with the shaft.  

Ill do a write up of the inverted next but would like to go test it first. anyone got a pool in auckland willing to let me shoot some foam Tongue.

Here is my inverted roller Running 7.5mm shaft (very short) 3 pairs of 16mm small id bands first band at 360 percent others at 320 percent ermes double roller mech full carbon body handle and muzzle custom rollers with ceramic bearings ronstan pulleys and custom carbon plate holding all the crazy lines together.

Carbon body is 8 layers of 200 GSM twill with specific areas eg trigger area with more reinforcement.

Tested all the guns in the pool and I must say I really like the inverted roller not only does it sling the 7.5mm shaft at Impressive speed with very little recoil the shots at 5m are very accurate!

I think I'm going to try make some more inverts maybe with rear rollers this time to test its abilities. I really do like the thought of a smallish 100cm gun that's easy to swing can be used for snapper snooping and smash a king when needed!








Thought I might give the guns a name so graphite (what carbon fiber is made from) was chosen seen in my custom epoxy curing cabinet much to the displeasure of my wife😄.

Back again with what some would call ridiculous but, I call it a inverted carbon roller with rear rollers, rolls off the tongue quite nice (pun intended).

start with a computer model.
3d print some moulds 

mould some carbon skins 

add some reinforcements

make a handle 

smack it all together and boom inverted carbon roller with rear rollers

After 20 years of making wooden guns of all known configurations, I decided to delve into knocking something up quickly in carbon.
More of a lego style assembly, than a true build, but fun all the same.

110cm invert roller, with ceramic muzzle rollers I turned up in the lathe, ball bearing blocks on the rubbers, 20mm primary rubber, and primeline 16mm rubber as the secondary. Both at 350% stretch.
Only using the 2 rubbers, as this is only pushing a 7mm spear.
Using a lightweight cuttlefish barrel, and MVD muzzle and handle. Will eventually drop some $$ and go with the double roller Ermes mech, which is a drop in replacement.

I'll fix up the overly long loops on the rubber to shackle connection when it comes time to re-do the rubbers next season.

This has already been tested on Warehou at close to full range when double wrapped, so does appear to have the goods. Hopefully will get to test this out on a thicker bodied fish :)

Great build. Its quite amazing how all these big manufacturers are making modular components so builder can lego things together to make the setups they like! 

That cuttle barrel looks very cool any pics from the top to take a look at the shape?

Do you think when loading, the rubbers rub on the body making it harder to load?

Popped another out of the mould from previous post but made it a conventional setup. bit of a different finish gold foil in epoxy, may have gone slightly over board with the foil.

There is no noticeable rubber friction on the barrel. Probably the ceramic rollers for the muzzle and bearing blocks help a lot in that regard.
When the rubber is wet, it's pretty slick, so friction would be negligible anyway.

The Ermes trigger being a straight drop in was not completely true. I had to relieve the handle to allow full functionality of the line release, and to allow the sear to drop fully. But the mounting holes were all perfect.





And because I could not buy the ceramic bearing blocks I wanted, I just made some up. Something spearfishing related to do when the weather was horrible.

Very cool! how did you make up the blocks? 
I have been 3d printing my sheaves and inserting ceramic bearings into them with various effectiveness. If the wall is to thin the 3d printed part has a habit of breaking apart after the shot.

Blocks were cut out of 2.5mm carbon fiber sheet on my CNC router, and the rollers cut on the lathe from ABS rod stock.
The blocks were run through static load analysis, and should be good for around 250kg of load, so overkill for this little gun. I'd rather over engineer, as you can never factor in how much of a hiding guns get in a boat, or unceremoniously dragged through the reef  when attached to a good fish.
