Hi Guys i've got the chance to use my old mans machine this coming Saturday. I have done it before with others on east coast (calm) beaches with minimal swell. Saturday has a swell of 1.4m with a set face close to 2m, am i nuts even considering it. Also i'm weary of others on the beach as Kariotahi has turned into a nut farm lately  with idiots. Does Hamilton's Gap have clear spots without snags. Or is it too risky there too with that size surf?

I'm happy to drive a little way down beach but not too far as its a family day meeting others and young kids.

Hamiltons Gap can be snaggy from what I've heard and I guess it's those who allow their lines to sweep around that have trouble but I know a guy who sets his just south of the rocks there. I know you need a huge distance between lines

I know a guy here who regularly sets his  long line at Kario, I can't recall his user name but hopefully he will be able to help you out.

Thanks Smudge

I've just rechecked the swell forecast and if you believe it Waitarastream which is close to H Gap, is looking far better with 1m swell and a 1.5m face, not sure why, i assume the lay of the land is different. I was there over new year and a guy had his out between the entrance and the rock on the right, no idea how he went though.

I agree id look left about a KM if I was none the wiser. But yes i hope some regulars will help a fellow fisher out...

Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!

Son has fished the penusual for yrs now, and does real well... only surf casting.
Sry but hes pretty mum of the places, as as you say , its just crazy at both places.
Knows the tides , espec north of kakatari.. top points, if can drive around u have a 20 min window and its all over.

For the whole peninsula..from the port nth
He waits for a few days. week smaller swells, winds and clear water.
He has mapped out the places clear of snags over many low neap tides... the holes, the rips

They also drive the beach for sea mullet on regular basis.
Result is he nails it far too often than I would like to admit.. even sold his rayglas a few yrs back as doesnt need it . even our young primary school granddaughter came with a prize or 2 at our local fishing club.

It comes back to pretty much all fishing, its doing the homework, putting in the miles, the feet.

Other than that , cant help any more than that sry..

Had a trial run at H gap tonight and had her going straight out with the line off set at the back to counter the northerly flow in a pretty ugly Swell. Was going perfectly until my bro appears to have turned the motor off whilst playing with remote maybe 5mins of no pull and it getting washed north was enough to keep it at a angle to the beach when it continued on its way for the rest of the 30min cycle. It ended up still being visible but only about 3/4 through the breakers and 45deg from its original direction.

Seeing as it would have only washed ashore anyway we pulled it back in early. There must be a bit of a ledge there and maybe not the best spot as we caught a brown Gurnard on the the last hook (closest to beach) and had several with seaweed and a few traces missing too. One good kahawai and about half of the remaining hooks had bait eaten so maybe fishy but the issue at the start meant we were never going to do well.

Still a learning curve for us and a nice couple hours with family. But not sure if we'll be doing it there next time.

Keep your baits small , hooked once and no bigger than half a matchbox in size
