Hi all, I’m currently in the process of rebuilding my 85 Glasscraft Piranha.

I’ve gone ahead and replaced the old windscreen (someone had made it practical but not pretty). I’ve moulded a single piece of Perspex into the same shape etc so it fits on the hull perfectly.

The old windscreen was mounted to the hull with a single flat chrome bar around the bottom of the screen to the hull, and an aluminium tube sliced down the middle around the top.

I’m looking to completely scrap that idea, and build a frame correctly.

Any idea of where I would find the correct aluminium materials to do this? Anyone got any ideas or experience in rebuilding their windscreens?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Ullrich Aluminium

1st , forming perspex etc , not a job I would do myself...If all good , how did you do it?

Anyway to the question
Had to do a bit of reshaping , positioning, new bottom seal of the screen on the commander...
Bottom edge is mounted on the bottom seal rubber, by cut off alloy 90 deg angle .. about 25 x 25 mm about 17mm wide..
Screwed to  top deck/ dash, and screws with nylock thru the bottom of the screen
The top edge, which also has the clips for the bimmini clears fit neat over the top edge of the screen.
Next time , althu may look a bit chunky, I would replace with alloy channel bit heavier...
Reason being is with the clears up, the top of the screen/channel flexes a little too easy...
Times when Im on the capstan, crew on the helm, moving the boat up , over the anchor to lift it... they tend to have 1 hand on the wheel and sort of grab and pull themselves up to see over the screen..

The screen was made by previous owner 12+ yrs ago, off the original, except slightly lower cause they used the original screen as the mould... resulting in the top 'bar going thru ones liner of sight.

Photos would help greatly. Sometimes will post direct from phone, though that's glitching for me these days. Or just save to PC and use the import button in the edit window.

I'd template with cardboard or cheap ply then fabricate. If DIY wood is much easier to work and hardwood or a sheet of marine ply, epoxy and paint isn't cost prohibitive. If Aluminium then you might need someone to form it for you.

This guys boat in Canada might give you some ideas. The windscreen detail is on page three, halfway down. I'm building the smaller 17'. He did an outstanding job; the windscreen looks fantastic.
