Ok lads, I’m still boatless and have a taranaki mad fisho coming to visit me in Whangarei next week with his family and wants to FISH.

I asked landbased or charter and he said both!

So local knowledge is required on what charter fishes well and what fish prey is it a good time to target?

What are good landbased locations be it off rocks beach etc within a 2 hour drive from whangarei that can produce this time of the year. Any advice appreciated.

Cronin is good. Book ASAP as he is always busy. Sumo also good. There's Nimble III which seems to cater to the lower end of the market. I decided I'd rather not fish than go with them again. A few options out of Tutukaka. Checkout Fish! Tutukaka. More options departing Paihia.

update. Went out with Cornin Charters Fryan 7m. Boat didn’t behave too badly. Day was a goodie amongst all the rubbish we have been happening. Noel is a top bloke and his knowledge on fishing this area is bottomless and he was happy to share spots and time and tides etc. legend. Tough day but his knowledge moving around different spots at different tides paid off with 24 snapper to 7 pounds. My visitors head back to the Naki with a great feed to share and some memories of the lovely coast up in the North.

Thanks for the charter lead guys. Good result.

Sounds like the quality of the charter and skipper had a lot to do with the success.
That what you pay them for.
Like most things, paying a bit extra for the real thing usually is a good investment.

The Nimbus is a large party boat, where you can join in with a large group, slow boat, but I believe good operation, but I dare say less personalised than a smaller boat with one skipper/deckie...

Bazza I think did a trip once... lets see if he relays his experience.
