A new mussel farm has been granted consent off the Eastern side of Ponui Island.
But why would the NZSFC object to this??
https://www.nzsportfishing.co.nz/fisheries/area-management/aquaculture/ponui-mussel-farm-proposal

Ponui Island farm manager objects on the grounds of having a farm in a Marine Park. What do they think the farms on the Eatern side of Coromandel are in.
Provide the Farm is lit no issues.

It would be another area in time to hold fish and help with water quality. Is this not what we want?
For me it would mean closer area in safer water as prodominant is sw.Give access to smaller vessels than trying to cross the Firth(did Saturday)

I believe there were huge natural beds of mussels originally in the area historically so it can’t be that. But mussel farms aren’t the environmental win win they have been portrayed. If in the wrong place where a lot are they destroy sandy bay environments with piles of dead shells covering the sea floor, sand goes and muddy reefs appear. Attracts different sea life and stops natural sand flow. Good for snapper bad for shellfish like scallops pipis etc and gurnard.

I hope in my life time the firths wild mussel seeding program pays off. The sea floor in miles of the firth were solid mussels before early dredging and as you say the firths water qualify would improve dramatically.

"Reel Deal"
Something that I did forget to mention.
5 or 6 yrs ago NZSFC/Legasea were happy for the farms in Coromandel to donate tonnes of mussels to be dumped North of Rakino Island??to help improve the water quality so one wonders what has changed.

Asked NZSFC why they object to such a farm, not the best response especially where they say "NO" to attending hearing or the opportunity to speak.

Yet Legasea seems to approve mussel farms, despite being part of the NZSFC

https://legasea.co.nz/2017/02/09/planning-for-an-abundant-hauraki-gulf-marine-park

Areas will be set aside to allow for environmentally responsible aquaculture, outlining areas to farm mussels, oysters and a range of finfish while allowing for future development of farming for species such as scallop and rock lobster and a range of seaweed. This activity will create both economy and employment in rural communities as well as further recreational fishing opportunities.

They end up being FADS so it's good for recreational fishers, as we've seen with the other mussel farms in the Gulf.

The proposed area seems to be on the edge of a high use recreational area.

It'll be a map derived from NIWA ramp surveys indicating where people fished. The dark reds and oranges are high rec fishing areas.

It's a heat map of recreational fishing activity, taken from aerial overflight surveys.

Basically hot (red/orange) areas show more activity.

Yep a few other areas are covered. It's getting pretty old though. Hauraki Gulf is done fairly regularly but the map is from 2008 now.

There's a version to look at online here:

I think the new farm is shown here on Navionics. Haven't fished there, but I've seen a few boats in there when coming back from the other side.
