Hi,
What would be a good boat rod and reel combo that could stop a decent sized kingfish?
My budget is about $200-$300 but dont care paying more if it is an awesome rod
Thanks

24 kg rated rod and a reel that can hold 24kg  (400 meters of nylon, preferably 500 plus) and can fish at least 8 kg drag on strike (that is actually a lot of drag but you will will need it if fishing near close to foul), preferably lever drag,  but star is ok. Otherwise a very heavy spin reel set up with 37kg braid And rod .. is getting outside price range though.
Catch em don’t lose em.  So 100Lb  trace or 120 black magic supple ( my favourite),  and at least 2.5 to 3 meters of the heavier trace.
Tld 25 works good as starter reel. Finor  Biscayne and  new  model Penns look good choices  too but haven’t used them. Older penn senators are pretty good with upgraded carbon fibre drags or even original Ht100 washers drags some models came with.

First question is livebait or jigs?
