I'm moving over to Tauranga this weekend and I want to know what the crabbing situation is like over those ways.

I own a crab trap and I want to go crab trapping but I'm unfamiliar with the harbour.

My question is; are the crabs in Tauranga harbour big and plentiful?

there would have to be is my guess. I know Worksux catches mountains of the paddler crabs just behind the surf up Simpson bays coro. Maybe try that side of the mount also ?

I was in the harbour a couple of weeks ago. Mrs was throwing chunks over the side feeding the large crabs that were there. 2m deep and the water was crystal clear. Each time the chunks went out, the bottom would come alive. We sometimes put the crab pot out off Papamoa beach on really carm days.

I hope you're right.  I. Hope. You're. Right.

I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands during the weekends, so I'm just trying to think of things to do to keep myself occupied.  Crab trapping is one idea that I thought of after seeing my forgotten crab trap sitting around just today.

Now I'm excitedBig smile  I didn't think anyone would know anything about crabs in Tauranga harbour but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Roughly what area was that in if you mind?, no need for an exact location as I'm sure you want to protect your fishing spot.

Damn, that is out of my reach.

That's OK, it's good to know there are crabs in the harbour.  I'm going to try on the opposite side of Sulphur Point Boat ramp.  On google maps it looks like a good place to start.

Might set the trap while I go surf casting and see what I get after a couple of hours. If that doesn't work, then I'll try different spots and set it over night.

I'm really keen for tasty crabs.

I'm sure they'll be right throughout the harbour.

I reckon your right.

I guess I'm going to have to do my home work on crab recipes, and may be watch a few cooking videos on YouTube.

I'm probably getting a little ahead of myself, I better focus on catch em first.Wink

Heaps of paddle crabs in the surf anywhere from the mount all the way up Papamoa and beyond. You can set your pot when it's calm. Other way is get bait in panty hose and get a big tangle of mono and tie it all around the bait. Put on a sinker and cast it into the surf. Leave it for a few minutes then slowly wind it in. The crabs get tangled in the mess. We.ve filled buckets doing it this way at papamoa

I can imagine all the paddle crabs off Papamoa Beach. I might give that mono method a try. I got two surf casters so I can put out two bait.
