As most of you will have noticed or not,
We now have the lowest value of ads permeating our environment.
Accidentally press the screen in the wrong place and we have sex from any country.

I get times are hard for now, but a forum that's a commercial formula that will do anything to survive or ensure it's original commercial imperatives, or maybe 'tis was the plan to build a product for future sale.

I get the commercial imperatives, but I struggle with it riding or progressing clandestine on the back of an open community involvement.

Do the moderators get paid.
Do the contributors get a hand out.
Of course not.
But this forum survives on the back of the fisherman who are involved because of fishing and boating and fervently contribute.

So I'm asking does this sit well for you or do,you have an opinion.

Get a bigger screen to reduce the likelyhood of accidentally clicking on an unwanted ad??

Perhaps a good question directed at the owner, Matt.

The advertisers/sales pay an amount to Fishnet.

The mods are volunteers, a bit like Citizens Advice Bureau, they are there to help, but have rules and guidance to follow and encourage. Otherwise as a public forum there becomes too much freedom of speech where such things as racialism, discrimination, bad taste, anti-everything squad, religious fanatics, political activists, conflict of interest and much more... Even many Mods are lesser these days.

Contributors are not paid just part of the fishing community to promote recreational fishing in NZ. We used to have regular overseas contributors, which was interesting as they told great tales and shared their adventures and vast experiences, sadly they have faded away.

As have many forum members and characters.

Other social media platforms have won many ex forum members. Facebook being a big one with lots of NZ fishing pages.

Is it up to us, yourself, et-al to keep it all going?

The survival of forums such as this is down to the quality of the contributors. Interesting and topical subjects being discussed sensibly with no personal attacks or belligerent repetitiveness. Humour, joviality, all help to create a place people look forward to visiting.
The is a reality that it costs money to provide and maintain this site, I don't mind some advertising... Provided I don't start getting emails offering me enlargement pills...

I don’t see any ads save for a banner below the header

Fnet don't choose all of the ads. Some of them are forum sponsors etc, yes, but for other ones they embed an ad "frame" and then an advertising middle-person (probably Google?) puts various ads in there for a tiny tiny amount per view; if they get clicks then Fnet probably gets a little bit more.

Worth mentioning that those ads will be customised via tracking cookies etc, so if you're being served up sex ads then that's what the algorithms have decided you want to see.... may want to use an incognito window next time you're on the more risque parts of the internet

I set up/coded kakariki.net , originally as kakariki.sytes.net back last century.
Was on a intel P2 win 98 machine, and ran on std home/office connection of 64kb.
Google ads came along, considered could make a bit money here, beyond the cost of updating server to a old gaming machine, every 10 to 15yrs and annual costs of re newing the web site registration and DNS stuff.. under $80.

Several yrs ago I closed new membership simply because the same questions where being asked over and over, and they breeders around the world who answered these questions  , like my self just got bored...or rather " use the damn search button or the "Quick Search " block on left each page.
So the server sits at my feet hosting several web sites, and kakariki is now a reference for those who are not too damn lazy to use the search functions.
The car club and couple other web sites are kept upto day
They cover  their site registration costs, I maintain it all for free... which is basically just check it is on the web every few days.

Still no ads..  I hate adds..
 Fish.net  is a bit different.
Yep has the same basic volunteer format, but professional coders, professional hosts etc.
Then as it is an extension/part of of Fishing News, it has a commercial interest.. by owners and 'sponsors' etc which means adverts,
Many are adverts of professional experts who are also members and supporters, often small business and hobbyists, to small and bigger charter guys.
And yeah their contribution to info in these forums is huge..

No I dont mind the ads
I dont get any pop ups.. the coders, admins here actually do a damn good job.
The index drop down across the top is sometimes annoying.
The ads on the right could be a little narrower.
The top ads are good , the bottom non fishing are questionable.. but bread and butter stuff.
No, cant rem the last time I accidently clicked an ad.

In saying that I dont use my phone or tablet for hardly any internet  forum , social media stuff....
I have a desktop.. next to the web/mail/ftp server.. with a proper screen and keyboard. This gets accessed in moments of MY spare time (not the employers or customers) over a coffee once , maybe twice a day

So I see ads a necessary evil ( like a boss is.. he signs the pay check at the end of the week).

And what BIG Dave says... except the last sentence... I could understand how that maybe a problem.

If have pop ups and stuff.. the issue will be as others above suggest.

Sadly, I don't think forums have a great future. It's a pattern repeated over and over again due to the effect of Facebook etc. Traffic on this forum is very light. At some point it won't make commercial sense to keep it going.

Which is a great shame; information lives a lot longer on these forums, especially if people use the search (or search using Google). Anything on Facebook is gone within a couple of hours on the popular groups.

Facebook was built to take advantage of smart phone technology and that is why it is so successful. Most people use phones to access the internet nowadays because they are so portable and  ... ummm smart.

Fb sometimes appears to lack quality content simply because there is so much content.  Post up a pic of a fish asking for an ID and you will get 10 comments saying it's a dead one. Hilarious stuff, but the technology of smart phones opens access to millions of people and there a lots of one liner replies and comments that lack substance - no one want's to write their life story using a phone.

I'm not saying that FB pages are rubbish, far from it but there is a lot of junk there too. You could say the same about the political stuff that clutters up our fishing site.

Of course that's my opinion and maybe it's all because of masonic interference.

But Smudge - fishing has politics interwoven into it too. Hard to separate it.
Parties taking money from Fishing Co's, political promises - cameras on boats etc,, the state of our fishery, prohibition on fishing during Lockdown.......etc.
I am in regular correspondence with MPI currently - over the state of our local fishery. They are being helpful and providing what data/info they have. And it is not very rosy.
But at the end of the day, politics will be what determines the outcome for the fish.

Interesting responses.
I see the ads because I use an iPad so I can read easily without bl....dy glasses which I hats wearing.

No girls on offer, catch of the day is all I can take in, the fish keep me calm.

I've always admired the effort the moderators put in. Can't imagine the sheer time put in.

Fb, not me.

No forums like these are as mentioned above filling the niche for those who fish, boat and like good communication , involvement, support and offers of support, insights and experiences.

I genuinely want to see places like these survive.

Not so long ago "smudge" there was 2 new sections created because of 2 posters posting political matters and fishing management matters.  As it was deemed not nessacary to clog up The Briny Bar.
Possibly thats where should of gone with "covid19" but seeing how no fishing was happening at the time guess it was ok??

But now we basically have one active moderator you cannot be on here all the time moderatingSmile

Yes guilty as charged.

For what its worth I really enjoy the forum exactly how it is. Yes There are alot of topics that are not fishing related, but we all have lives as well and not all of us are out there doing it 7 days a week unless you are TT of course.
There seems to be fairly varied points of view which I find interesting.... and anyone who drops a bombshell has to basically put up a link to verify there info is a great way of weeding out the sh.t talkers etc.
On the subject of pop up adds..... 2 weeks ago I went to miter 10 mega Albany to by a new sensor outdoor light. I didnt google anything before hand- Just went in, found one and brought it.
The next time I used my PC I had pop up adds for outdoor lights coming at me for days.... How is that possible? coincidence?

Thanks for the heads up Mattoo - few things to deal with here.

We have always run ads and as a few have noted, that makes the whole thing commercially viable by paying for hosting and site development and the occasional cold beer after a long day at the office.

What is new is we're running some programatic ads by Taboola that display content based on cookie/search history - essentially stuff you've shown interest in/searched for etc.

Sooooooo Mattooooooo.  I'll let you contemplate the background on the type of ads that are appearing as I'm getting things like Marine Deals ads, Jet-ski accessories and winter recipes for soups and scones. But on a more serious note, if anyone is getting dodgy pop-up ads please let me know ASAP as our ad-server did get hacked at one stage and the code was clever but not malicious.

Is the forum doomed? Personally I don't think so but only time will tell and there's disruption everywhere you look. I think Smudge is on the money as to the quality of comments - forums are more likely to be a place where you get sensible and well-founded comments, advice and help. And that help is not necessarily coming from some 'influencer' who is on some dodgy kickback deal from the company whose brands they're trying to jam down your throat. Many people are realising that there's a quantum leap between good credible information we get on here that comes from a genuine desire to help others and the crap you wade through on FB.

Importantly though, Fishing.net.nz has grown from being largely dependent on the forums to a massive site where ~180,000 individuals view well over a million page views a month. It's a massive resource of literally thousands of articles and news items and now with NZ Fishing News in the same business, we have a constant supply of great content written by some of NZ's best fishing journalists and anglers.

Our intention is to keep that flow of great content going and supporting what i'm sure  most of you on here would agree is a really valuable resource for anyone who has even a passing interest in fishing.

Comments welcome!

Pjc,
I always thought the briny bar was the place for talk on any subject.
I realise that there are many areas of the forum that were designed for specific conversations but this has been sidelined by users need for simplicity.
Briny bar shows up first and precedent of past posts suggests that this is the free for all commentary zone.

It's great that we have a free for all commentary section, not a free for all comment section by the way.

So long live the opportunity for fisherman and boaties who have options and experiences outside of fishing who want to comment on their life's interests and opinions.
But please if only staying on topicc.

Mattoo I am on a sailing site which has all sorts of political stuff but its hidden in a section called "small talk' to be active on it you need to seek permission. Why to stop a hundred different threads and loosing sight of what the site is intended for,how build/improve/safety etc just like it /was on here Fnet.. The idea of hidding some content was not to put visitors off the sight but get those onboard with a passion sailing related matters.simular to Fnet.
I get enough political stuff from a former Fnet member via FB but its entertaining wind him up.

Something to consider if you don’t pay for something you are the product that is being sold. This is the Google/ Facebook business model. I personally avoid FB like the plague it is.
I really enjoy this site and was getting way too much advertising but changed browser and it’s much more manageable now. Advertising is a small price to pay same as free to air TV but some browsers seem worse and more invasive than others.

My phone has never ever sent me an ad for a bucket of paint, a pack of hooks, or a russian bride. It just makes and receives phone calls, and takes real crap photos. It has buttons and just does what i tell it to do. It has a battery life of several days so i guess i can be tracked longer than some other type of phones, but hey thats allright as i dont have to find a power point twice a day, and if they(whoever they are) want to put an ad in front of me based on my phone use then they will have to put an ad in the paper.

Unfortunately ads are just a way of life and if you dont like it then block it, ignore it or get a dumb phone.

I think if we continue to contribute good discussions, help and encourage newbies and anyone with queries and share good info then the site will nurture, evolve and grow as it always has.

If some continue to act like idiots/dicks or children then less people will stay and contribute.

Up to us all, really...Thumbs Up

My son told me the same thing. He reckons they were listening to everything we said. We did some tests. Dad was right again. Despite our conversations with phones present and actually on the phone I had no ads pop up for rocket propelled grenades, turkey egg incubation, hair restoration or clogged arteries. Still got pop us for Swedish brides for boomers - dunno why Wink

In all seriousness Smudge i think the forum, or forums in general tend to be more substantial with the conversations able to be had than other social media platforms. Kind of goes back to what others have already said a bit.

Having taken a sample of the early posts in this thread I apologize if I miss points raised by others. The decline (in my opinion expressed some time ago x a few) is more than in part due to removing banter, a bit of niggle and chaos many years ago. They were damned popular. There was some seriously good humorous and satirical writing, face to face interaction and fishing info. Some legendary fishing trips with a number of members.

Time takes a toll, a bunch move from active to rocking chair to deceased. I still believe controlled vibrance wins over old school Victorian values. I accept the need to protect from litigation.

RIP Bender, ex moderator and "Adventure Rider" fan for contrast.

Whether that approach maintains relevance long term, or just spices things up for an aging, but financially relevant group in decline, I'm unsure. I'll take vibrance while I can.

I still go to Swashies, catch up with some of the Shoreboyz and wonder where some of the characters are now. Sadly rarely here.

I originally joined the forum because an interest in boating rather than fishing.  So the Boat shed was my sub forum of choice.  Over the last few years it seems to have less and less activity and what is there is for smaller boats. I really enjoyed the build threads or questions about boats that guys with more knowledge and  Experience than me would answer. I think Tagit was an excellent contributor along with Don.  I haven’t seen a post from either of those guys for a long time.

In the Non fishing related threads I have noticed a massive increase in objectively incorrect  and misleading information from a small but vocal minority.  At first it was fun trying to debate them but I quickly realised it was pointless because for the most part they don’t even understand what they are saying just spouting nonsense they’ve heard from somewhere else. There is no interest in debate or learning only broadcasting.

All this just leads to less posting and general disengagement I’m afraid.

A lot of the best 'action' in the forums these days comes from the more specialist areas where that topic is the sole focus of the contributors. The Freshwater forum is a great example of that as are the sticky post in Fishing Reports.

The Work Up is full of really cool stuff too.

Tagit handed out great advice alright but for personal reasons no longer contributes.
