Folks, if you have a multi-piece graphite rod that's got stuck so you can't get it apart (reasons range from a vacuum to lack of lubrication, and for me, I think vibrating on a long road trip in the boat until it was stuck fast), try this method:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy6XQuTlNpI" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy6XQuTlNpI

It worked for me today on a favourite softbaiting rod after I had got extremely frustrated and just about given up, having tried all the other supposed surefire methods: freezing the 'male' section for ages and warming the 'female' side; twisting and/or straight pulling with all my (reasonable) might with rubber kitchen gloves (this is starting to sound dodgy !!); the four-handed crossover tug (sounds like a 1970s scout camp!); dripping CRC or similar in the crack (still dodgy!!); and putting the rod behind my knees and trying to use leg power to pull (dodgy!).

The only adaptation I made to the vid was to use wide swathes of duct tape to fix the wood to the rod, instead of the electrical tape. Also, I had to work out how to reverse the main part of the Irwin clamp so that it pushed apart rather than together.
My dad predicted the wood would just slip along the rod and the whole contraption fall apart, but the tape held fine.

I half expected to crack the rod somehow, but the very small clamp movements and keeping everything aligned worked a treat. Try it.

Now thats a really good tip (also dodgy😁). Really makes sense when you see it, thanks for sharing TTK👍😉

I had a rod some yrs ago an old cheapie that was very stuck.
1st used duct tap full width and single turns but slipped.
Then tor long strips 1/2 roll wide and wound around the bits ply off cut rod shaft.
Did much the same except instead of clamped, I tapped harder and harder with a carpenters hammer, on the ends of the bits of wood.. doing one side then the other till it just started to separate...

The crd dripping didnt work even when left over night.
It did work on my extendable 'turn and lock' boat hook... after a bit of 'work'
Didnt try any of the other suggested methods.

I cannot suggest the best method to release stuck rod sections but CAN offer a simple method to avoid it happening in the first place.

The very first thing I was shown when being given fly fishing instruction was as follows  :-

Every time before assembling rod sections simply place the male part in the lower part of the outside of your nose in the groove where it joins your face then rotate the rod section 360 degrees. This readily available source of a thin layer of natural lubricant can be seen as a thin smear & by following this simple procedure you can be assured of NEVER having to face the problem of suck rod sections EVER again.

Only takes a few seconds to do therefore I am continuously surprised that hardly anyone is aware of it ... but then again had I not been shown, I too would no doubt have continued to face the ongoing dilemma of stuck sections!

I think the excessive sticking was due to being mounted vertical (rod holders) for many bumpy trips over several season .. then storing , never actually having to pull apart.

Then comes that trip you have to throw across the back seat...

Later get something out of the back seat, rod moves, slam the door ...Confused snap the tip..

Haha, I think they recommend the 'outside' of the nose - preferably from a greasy pored teenager, i presume.
But I reckon you could be on to something. Excrete your fluid into an old Marmite jar and market it as 'Terra's Grease' - ideal for drag stacks etc.

A lot of the problem with a stuck ferrules is trying to grip the rod to get a straight pull to get it apart. One of my mates gave me a couple of pieces of rubber? anti slip pad/mat. It is amazing how easy it is to pull a stuck ferrule by using this material. I actually used the material today on one of my fly rods. I don't know where you buy this material, but keep your eye out. I'm sure it will cost bugger all. Hope this helps.

Cheers
