Hi All, With a couple of poor trips over the last few weeks today certainly made up for it! Day break Launch saw me settle in fishing by 6.30am. First few hours slow until the Big Snaps finally turned up. For the next Two hours I caught seven over the 20 lb mark, with the best an 11 kg model 84 cm long. This one came home as with two others as one had swallowed gear and two more to buggered to get back down. Others Released. Nothing gets wasted as I share the fish and heads, wings around. Don't be Shy to use huge Fresh Baits as pictured, Good Snaps make mince meat of them Times like this when I'm catching good fish I'm only trying to nail a really big one for personal goals and get back my top spot in NZ measure Comp. It will happen but not today. A few Pics from Today. Cheers All..

Great stuff Geoff. Is it weird that i get really excited by well presented big bloody baits? Probably. But those look really good and fresh. Just quickly. What are your rig details. Obviously 2 hooks. But line weight, trace size, hook size? |

hope the big 90+cm one is waiting for your next big juicy half kahawai bait - we can't have a bloke on a pesky jetski steal your national length title...

I fished along side Geoff this past Sunday with my partner. Fishing was a bit slow but still managed to take home a good feed. Biggest snap for us went 5.2kg. Monday evening was time to cook the catch. I thought while there's a selection of fish I'd try a little experiment (very non scientific). Big snapper 5.2kg vs little snapper 1.2kg vs gurnard taste comp. 5 voters in total. Big snapper won with 5 votes!!! P.S we'll be back Geoff |

Yep they are super fresh, caught minutes before. They look alot smaller in photo's but are big Kahawai baits. Also when you hit on to them like this, i will go backbone in as well for a stronger bait. Rigs are an individuals choice. Most Guys laugh at mine, a typical comment is wot the hell are you after Sharks? And the same guys don't catch big Snaps 100lb tough trace, Mutsu 32 mill circles-commercial grade, Crane swivels- better quality than barrel. half ounce sinker.

Well done Geoff, out of interest do you catch many snapper on the bottom hook of that rig. I have found when using 2 hook rigs the vast majority of fish are hooked on the top hook (10/0 youvella mutsu hooks). ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">

Thanks Geoff, most times my big baits are skippy heads, Butterflied fresh big Koheru, big jack macks or smallish kahawai, or kahawai fillets. Might have to give the kahawai heads ago. Small snaps can be a pain with the skippy heads as they clean them out pretty quick, but big snapper love them. ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">

I agree the best way for a 20+ snapper is still stray lining big baits in a good burley trail up here, but it is getting really hard to find really big snapper out from Tauranga on a consistent basis, some people are still doing well though. They are there but it is a struggle, plenty of 10-16 pound fish but those bigger ones are becoming few and far between. ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">
