Apologies if this has been covered before but the search function didn't bring up a lot.

Im in the market for a 3-3.5m inflatable boat for family recreational activities such as swimming and snorkeling. But I would also like to use it for inshore fishing and spearfishing.

Ive been looking at the Takacat LX series 300 and 340 models as well as the New Kit discovery 330 Cat. I only have a 5hp Suzuki 4 stoke to power it so not expecting it it be a thunder cat but it does need to be able to push along with two adults and light gear.

The other criteria is it must also be portable/pack into a car or put on roof racks (both boats are under 36kg so will be fine for this)

Does anyone have any experiences with these boats? Are they reasonably robust? is one better than the other for the uses im looking at?

Thanks in Advance.

I had a Takacat, before some asswipe stole it.

Not a bad boat, but the transom was absolute rubbish and I ended up replacing it with UHMWPE. I also note that all bolts used were 304SS, which pissed me off a bit, as to have these 316 would have been probably a whole dollar more.

The design of the ropes/d-rings on the tubes managed to scratch my fully faired boat, which pissed me off no-end. If you're not using it as a tender, this wouldn't be a concern to you.

I liked that it had handles on the inside of the tubes, such that it makes it easy to carry by one person, I like that the TrueKit also has these. It was a very important criteria for me when I purchased a replacement, most don't seem to have those handles.

In the end I ended up going for a Zodiac, for a few different reasons, but needless to say I am very happy with it.

I probably would buy a Takacat again, but, I think I preferred the TrueKit over it when I was looking at replacing the Takacat. Haven't used or tried a TrueKit, however.

A Takacat would give you an amazingly stable and safe fishing platform but it wouldn't go much more than walking speed with only 5hp.

I once saw a small sailing catamaran around 14 foot converted to a fishing platform powered by a small outboard that did the trick and moved along nicely and it was a few miles offshore too.
