Gday all. I'm pretty new to this jigging caper and looking for some advice. I have a Trinidad TN16 on a Kilwell Talon that I have used for jigging but also bottom fishing snap's and even trolling albys. Its a primo setup but I wanted something a bit bigger so have picked up a TN30 Trinidad loaded with 50lb braid. Now I want to match it with a rod suitable for jigging upto 300-350g. I have been looking at the Ugly Stik rods on marine Deals and was wondering what you guys think about them for jigging? Any help appreciated.

The Ugly Stik is very good for the money. I would also have a look at the Shimano Abyss PE5, excellent value for money there too. Okuma Metaloid Jig also good.

I hate to be a downer but the TN30 (assuming TN30A?) is going to be a terrible jig reel, it's far too wide, you will constantly be having to bugger about with line management. It has the same gearbox, drag etc etc as your TN16NA, just a much wider spool.

Hey thanks for the reply. I can see what you mean about the tn30 spool being wide. To be honest I had not considered it. The 2 Trinidads I have are the older gold models and they are what I have so will be used lol.

Fair enough :) Dedicated jigging gear is bloody expensive so you may as well "test the waters" before going nuts. Personally, I'd get something a little nicer, Shimano Abyss or even a Jigstar Ninja (or a Katana if you get one on a good special), then if you decide you're really into this jigging thing you can put a nice reel on top and keep the Trinidad for heavy bottom fishing etc.

EDIT: Honestly the TN16/Talon sounds like a nice combo, have you tried swinging a 300g jig off it? What weight class is the rod, and what weight braid have you got on the reel?

from the gear you have, the Trinidad is the weak link.  Move the TN30 and save the $ difference for a specialised jigging reel from Accurate or Maxel.  The real magic happens whenever you put together purpose made jigging tackle.
