I have a 4 year old boy who likes fishing. Over the last year, we have dedicated ourselves to getting good at "sprat" fishing from wharves.

We catch spotties, yellow eyed mullet, parore, piper, jack mackerel and kahawai, but the only goals are entertainment and to teach him about fishing and the marine environment.

Casting out half a pilchard and waiting for a snapper to come along just isn't going to keep him interested. The action needs to be immediate and sustained.

What we have learnt so far:

1. Use a size 12 hook and light line for lots of bites and fish landed. Mainline is 7lb monofilament and leader is 3lb fluorocarbon.

2. Float fishing is fun. He loves watching the float go under.

3. Avoid sabiki rigs. 6 hooks + 4 year old = trouble!

4. Berley is important.

5. Plan on 1 - 2 hours fishing maximum before interest levels drop off.

6. Take snacks.

7. If the weather is really bad, stay at home.

8. Use the cheapest tackle money can buy. We've caught at least a hundred fish on a $15 rod/reel from Warehouse. A 4 year old is pretty clumsy and can't be expected to look after gear. It's no fun watching your progeny step on your favourite soft bait rod.

PLEASE ADD YOUR ADVANCED SPRAT FISHING TIPS!

a good bait for sprats is a mixture of flour/water and a bit of vegemite(binds it)Not just the young fellas love catching sprats, piper etc. my 19/16 and I spend a bit of time on wharves doing exactly the same-thing,a couple of hrs enough for the cat, then off to nearest chippie shop and a local lemonade shopLOL

Take one larger rod set a live bait out with no expectations.
1st time around, not 1st sprat caught thu
Hook something on that, and watch the excitement of the story when get home.
