Had a bout of shingles - horrid illness to have. and not fished for ages. Decided to give it a go today and a small King Country stream.
A good day of fishing, in fact a red letter day!
Started off with 2 small rainbows, then a decent 3lb rainbow, lost one as it jumped off then the biggie.
The stream is VERY low and slow flowing, which is bad as it gives the trout too much time to check out your lure.
Approached a pool that always has big trout but normally, unapproachable as there is a deep hole to wade downstream of it. It was waist deep today....there was a very large trout at the head of the pool so flicked my small cicada fly slightly ahead and to the side away (only about 6 metres away)...it turned towards it then ignored it. I changed my fly to a little sinking pheasant tail. Again it turned rapidly towards it and turned away but went back to it's place.
I changed my fly again to a 16 deer-hair caddis floating fly. As I was about to cast, I noticed another big trout so close I could have poked it with my rod. Decided to cast to the front fish as the 2nd one might take it if the other fish ignored it.
Cast was good and it floated past the front fish but then it turned and slowly swam back and slurped it down....woohoo! It was too big for my landing net but managed to get it ashore. Got my scales and it weighed 4.7 kg - that's 10 lb 5 ounces - my first 10 ponder trout. Held it in the current using a cloth and let it swim away.
Shortly after, forgetting to re-tie my hook got another, which I never saw, but it broke me off. Another 2 decent rainbows and came home early!!
Sadly, never had my phone or camera.

Tie a knot in your hanky Roy to remind yourself to take a camera.Big smile
A real shame that you didn't get a pic to remember your trophy fish.
Well done on a top effort...a mighty day

Uncle - I hate mobiles and it spends a lot of time, lost, but yes, would have liked a photo as a memoire...my own memory is fading fast!

Very cool to read. Congrats on the fish, especially from a small stream like that.
