Subject: Gt Barrier weekend - New dates - extra spaces
Date Posted: 26 Feb 2019 at 3:33pm
New dates for weather cancelled trip and more spaces available. Go to end of thread.

As those that have read the Fund Raising thread will know I am thinking about running a weekend charter to Barrier and beyond to help raise some extra funds for the kids team to use to attend the Robotics World Champs in the US late April.

I have had 6 people express interest (pending dates), and need 8 total to make it work. Will use this thread to discuss the trip and possible dates, as well as to gather the 8 anglers together if we can. You can post any interest or comments in this thread.

Timing
Lets try these dates -
Depart - after work or mid avo depending on what people can do on Fri 5 April.
Return approx 6pm - 7pm on Sun 7 April

Cost - $585 per angler + catering costs. That includes bait, ice, burley, deep water/game rods and tackle.
Full payment when you book please so i am not left hanging by people changing their minds last minute. If you do need to cancel you will get refunded as much as we can get from any replacement angler. Could be 100% or could be less if trying to fill a spot really late. Full refund if cancelled due to weather and can't reschedule or the trip doesn't go for any other reason.

The Trip
We can flex this around to what the team agree as their preferences but at this stage I would be thinking -

Friday avo snapper fish on the way across if we can leave early enough. Otherwise evening meal and socialising onboard as we cross to Barrier. After dark we drop to 8knt cruise for safety so you can hit the sack any time you like. Probably at Barrier between 10pm and midnight.

Sat morning early start for the crew and we head out to some of my Puka spots and maybe a new Bluenose spot we will be checking out next week. Probably an hour or two in the dark and then put some lures out for another hour or two. Guests can sleep in until they get hungry or we arrive at the Puka spots. Fish for Puka, Gemmys etc and then an hour or so trolling to the Bluenose spot. Fish for Bluenose then 2 or 3 hours trolling back to Barrier. Alternative is flag the Bluenose and head down to the Mokohinaus. Chase snapper and Kingfish there until dark and travel back to Barrier. Lunch on the run and late dinner back at Barrier

Sun morning early start and have boat setup for a shallow water burley and strayline session or a deeper water Snapper session depending on preferences. We will likely move around several spots during the day so can change techniques and do some drifting with jigs, softies, sliders etc as well. We can leave a bit of time for checking out any mid gulf workups on the way back, or leave Barrier late depending on what people agree on.

That's a rough plan to start with. Good mix of chasing big Snaps, Puka, Bluenose, other deeep water stuff, and maybe some Kingis depending on what people want. Some trolling for marlin etc as we move between spots in the right places. Weather and peoples preferences can change any of this.

Some pics from Barrier and spots we may visit. Will add them when I can get the photo uploader to work sorry.

For now imagine some big ugly forum guy holding a 20lb+ kelpie, a 30kg+ Puka, and a big chilly bin getting filled with pup Puka, Gemfish, and big Golden Snapper. The other Puka were all to big for the chilly bin, but those pups are great eating.

Three confirmed now and 2 checking dates so looks like we will be going on this one.

Did I mention that my very (cooking) talented daughter will be preparing some serious baking for the trip! That and the post trip cleaning are her contribution to the fund raising part of this trip.

Need at least 3 more so grab yourself a spot before I send it out to my other fishing groups. Would be good to have a forum only trip is we can.

Cheers RD. If the interest levels are good I will run another similar trip later in the year. It is a good Winter/early Spring trip as that opens up some closer in Puka options and the Winter fishing for big Snaps is very good also.

A lot of the previous generation of  forum guys used to do a regular winter mission to Barrier and have a fishing comp each year. Probably did that for 5 or 6 years using a couple of different bases. Did the Mercury's one year as well. Have a feeling that we might have topped well over 20 boats one year and a dozen or more would be normal. You had to crack 20lbs to win the Snap prize most years. Escorted a bunch of 6m boats back from the Barrier in 30knt+ winds one trip. just tucked in on Tagits transom and they were happy as. Escorted a 7m boat around from the back of the island to Fitzroy the day before and that was 45knts. Not so much fun and he wouldn't get caught like that again in a hurry I imagine. Boat was called Deep **** and that was what he was in. Barrier is an awesome place.

What sort of draw (amps or watts) does it take John? There are big batteries and an inverter onboard so we can power it OK as long as the batteries don't get flattened by it overnight. Have a single berth with a power point above it so that should work for you.

We will leave Friday avo but that could be 6pm or 2pm depending on when people can all get here. Earlier gives us time for a fish on the way over if we see a work up etc. Not a big deal if we leave later though. Will still be at Barrier late evening.

Can all those who have said they are coming please note here what time they can make it on Friday.
If John is good to go we have 5 confirmed, 1 pending, and need 2 more

The boat inverter will give you 240v at the plug just like home. Just need the amps or watts off the label to work out the battery drain. Seem to remember Bill (Billfish on here) using one a few years back when he was at Barrier on Tagit and it was fine.

Pleased to see such good response however since putting my name forward have been reminded that I am semi committed to a Mohaka fishing/rafting trip on the 6th / 7th April.

Therefore if that is the same dates as the Barrier trip then it is only fair to forego my booking, albeit it reluctantly, particularly as will be in Dunedin the following weekend should it be postponed for a week due to weather or whatever.

Any updates re this trip as getting really close now?

What is the weather likely to do as the Mohaka raft/fishing trip I am booked for now looking a tad uncertain due to the likelihood of intense rain.

Watching the weather at the mo. 20knt SE wont allow much good fishing. Will update here daily and make a call early so everyone can plan. Plenty of backup dates so wont go unless we can do the fishing we planned.

Here are a few fish from a couple of weekends back. Different area but got to love a strayline session

update would be nice? As have to work out if free for alternative dates. Understand that weather is a problem when looking so far out.

Posted By: formtool
Date Posted: 11 Apr 2019 at 8:49pm
Ok going to try and be nice.
Charter was offered form the 26th Jan for April. 8 people paid $$ for the opportunity to enjoy said fishing charter. Sadly Mr Weather said no. That's fine. This was for a fund raising for a event as below
The VEX Robotics World Championship will once again take place in Louisville, Kentucky, starting with the VEX Robotics Competition and VEX U portion of the event from April 24-27, followed immediately byVEX IQ Challenge portion held April 28-30.

This is where I get confused?
Looks like this event we go ahead before Paid charter, so money raised for fund raising paid to person before we get what we have paid for?
1. Don't think this is fair.
2. Refunds should have been offered straight away as charter did not go ahead.
3. No communication on alternative dates in the last 7 days. WHY?
4. Sorry Dave this is our money not YOURS. Please don't spend it on the VEX until we have received what we have paid for. or at least agreed on another date.

Dave, I like you and meet a few times. but I hate parting with $ over a long term and not knowing what is happening. Also getting PM from other people on the same thought.
Please Explain?

Yes we all have priorities, but when your business is a charter company, wouldn't communication be key?

Hi All
Sorry but have been dealing with a few things away from work and been off here for the past week or so. Back on now. Apologies to those that were wondering what was happening.

New possible dates - I have 2 spots available for the same trip itinerary on Fri 26th to Sun 28th (weekend after this one). Mix of forum and non-forum guys. Will be max 7 anglers (maybe only 6), but you can join in for what you have already paid. If anyone who wasn't already booked wants to join in just let me know.

I can do another trip 3rd to 5th May

Next dates after that are 24 to 26 May

The Barrier big Snaps & Puka fishing get better as we get a bit later in the season, so no panic if those dates don't work.  I wil put up extra dates if they don't.

Anyone reading this who is free for the next 3 days we are heading out and I have some space. Trying for some more big Snaps and hopefully a Puka or two. Just need to chip in for fuel & food etc. PM me asap if you are interested. Likely leaving mid morning tomorrow

Please those that booked and those others that are interested in the Barrier trips as well, PM me with your preferred dates and I will put it all together.

Well, they say a picture says a thousand words & speak for themselves.

Went out on the 26th and the weather was great! We went to Tagit's puka spot, much much further than I had expected..

Bonus, as you can see from the variety of fishes we caught. Great bunch of guys on-board. Small group of us, just 5 as 2 dropped out.

Tagit/skipper was fantastic, woke up at 4am to drive us to the puka spot while we slept like babies until 8am. Breakfast as you can see was waiting for us, prepared by Tagit... what more can you ask for... not only great bunch, great fishing, great skipper, great boat, oh well just throw in a great sunset as well on the way back, to seal the deal...

only bummer, i should have worn gloves when handling that ugly red scorpion fish...I think I got spiked, cos I started walking funny for the next two days after the trip...

looking forward to another trip with TagitBig smile

How many people were booked on this trip? I’ve known Tagit for a long time and he’s a genuine good bugger. I haven’t heard from him but I’m guessing he must have fallen on hard times as he’s certainly not the sort to willing rip people off.

If those that missed out on their trip on Tagit get in touch with me I’ll try and get ya all out for a days game fishing on my boat over summer, it’s no Tagit but it catches the odd Marlin. Or if you’d rather jump on for a days snapper fishing in the gulf I’ll do that too. My shout as long as you accept it as compensation for ya trip ya paid for on Tagit and put the matter to rest.

I’m not a charter, just a private boat but as no money will be changing hands it’s all good.

This is my boat, have all the gear for any eventuality. Could take 3 game fishing or 4 for a snapper fish.

I think there's at least 4 of us still owed. I don't like to whinge about stuff, i know times can be tough and i've given him a fair amount of time to at least give me an explanation, but i've called, txted, emailed, private messaged on thehulltruth.com etc.

No reply whatsoever.

Then i called him on Friday night on another phone and shockingly to me he answered the phone, then i told him who it was and he hurriedly fobbed me off and told me he'd ring me later that night, but didn't.

Posted By: MJ
Date Posted: 29 Sep 2019 at 9:51pm
That is a very generous offer Raging Bull.  I appreciate what you are trying to do here - but the simple fact is that I did not pay a sum of money to go fishing with you. We were encouraged to pay a charter to help someone's child attend a robotics tournament. I don't know if that child got to the tournament but I most certainly did not get the charter promised in return. People fall on hard times. We all understand that, but to get radio silence on the matter is simply unacceptable. I for one will not take up your offer - generous as it is. Tagit needs to front. I am very happy to accommodate him and support him through whatever difficulty he is facing - even if it means no trip - but I will not accept being ignored.

All this pussy footing around rubbish some of you guys write on here about a guy who has ripped ya off, hangs up on ya and bulls**ts is a joke. If it happened to me i can guarantee you i would have my money back or items to the value of wot he owed me by now one way or another!

the way he's just ignoring you guys would really brass me off. That he has been posting on the Hull Truth as Aliboy while this has been going on doesn't sit well with me .

I fully understand the offer of Raging Bull..

Dave has helped out, often aty his own cost so many on these forums and elsewhere foe many yrs.
One just has to go back over old threads to see just a few of them.
Hes has been a man who is the 1st to step up with a spare part or good solid information on how too.

Then falls on hard times..
So here is a good bugga thru want, embarrassment , dunno .. but in many way I understand his withdrawal..
Dave is also the type of gut, when things get tough, doesnt stash egg nests away in hidden trusts accounts and stuff.. which is where 'nice guys' 'go wrong' and go down the tubes totally....
yet still get the SAME flack.

I think RB, and many others.. (the silent majority, who we often see in real life , and private communication) sees Dave in the same or similar light.

So when RB comes up with such an offer, in effect to pay off any of Daves 'debts' to forum members, and get turned down..yet still want to pursue the debit..
For far more than one reason, I think it is way unfair on a  VERY good bugga hitting bad times.

PS Im not sure if have ever met RB personally, Only know from reputation think have seen him (think was him) hang a marlin from a tree to weigh thu..

That’s all well and good Steps and yep he’s been great over the years with his advice and help and RBs offer is really awesome of him but I think Tagit should have the manners , balls or whatever else you want to call it to front up to the lads on here who he’s taken money from , if he’s fallen on hard times with the tax man or whatever most of us would understand and be sympathetic but to just to ignore the f.netters on here and go on posting on another forum is just rude .

All good, I understand people’s frustrations, just thought I’d make the offer in the hope of helping all those involved. I’ll check out of this one now and wish everyone all the best.
