I'm just wondering where does everyone buy their lures and other bits and pieces from?  I've been looking online, as well as in the likes of Hunting and Fishing, The Warehouse etc, and there seems to be a very wide range in prices and range and quality.
Is there a particular store or website that you favour?

I predominantly use:

Marine Deals
(larger ticket items that are considerably cheaper here over other retailers)

Smart Marine (Mt. Wellington!)
Convenience purchases and things the others don't sell.. like my Weber!
Always excellent service and go above and beyond

Kaveman Tackle (Forum sponsor)
My microjigs, kaburas, slowjigs and some soft baits! Great advice too.

Pretty much as above. Kaveman for jigs, otherwise Marine Deals. If I need something in a hurry, then it's one of the local stores, and pay the $ for convenience.

From your other new post re freshwater fishing near Dunedin, some of the above answers may not be helpful (though good advice for salt water in the upper North Island!).

I would say the local H&F would be a good start for lures, and ask to speak to a fresh water specialist. It obviously depends if you're trying to soft bait for fresh water fish, or use spinners or bibbed lures. For the latter, I would say the small CD5 or 7 Rapalas are as good as any, though pricey if you fish snaggy areas.
Taupo Rod and Tackle has good online service if you know what lures you're after.
Rebel Sport has a few decent lures which are good value in a 30% sale.

In terms of terminal tackle (swivels), I would recommend sticking with known brands - you probably are familiar with Kilwell, Mustad etc. For flourocarbon leader material, you can't go wrong with the Japanese brands in 6-10lb depending on your fishery.

As you say you've been out of the game for decades, I would also see if there is a club near you where you can re-connect with local fishos, get advice and potentially go on trips.

There are many different types of jigs for many different applications. The main factors are target species and depth but there are lots of other factors.

Buy local will generally give you a better result than buying online, but make sure you shop at a place with real fishermen who are behind the counter. As has already been said, Kaveman from here is as good an expert as you will find, especially for snapper jigging.

Thank so much everyone for your replies.  I will go into town and speak to the staff at a few stores for some local advise.  I'm clearly doing something wrong. I've now been fishing for 2-5 hours a day, most days for 3 weeks and have only ever had the one bite. I know the whole point of fishing is that you dont always catch anything but its becoming a little disillusioning.
I'll also check out if there are any clubs in my area.  Thanks all.

The target species is apparently trout near Dunedin...

All of us were in that frustration phase at various points, trying new methods etc.

Try to find some back issues of NZBayfisher magazine which has had some good articles on spinning for trout in the South Island, covering lures, lines, gear etc. Also, on YouTube there's a guy who posts videos about the Twizel Canals, but he also does a few vids on fishing lowland rivers with spinning gear for brown trout.
And if you search YouTube under Rapala trout, you'll find vids by some guys who catch great South Island fish on those small Rapalas I mentioned above.
Good luck.
