Have just bought a boat out of Florida and awaiting it's arrival in NZ. It has no provision for an electric anchor so being a glass boat going to have a well cut in the bow to place a drum winch in with a lid that covers the top. Has anyone had much experience with the Viper, BLA or other brands of drum winches? Ideally have 100m of rope with 10m of chain. Boat is a 7.2M fibreglass T top. General anchoring is Taupo or coast Tauranga to Whakatane area so sand mud with the occasional rocky bit.

I have a Viper Pro series II 1000, on a 5.3m Figlass Firestar. I have only had the boat a month, and operated the anchor winch 4 times. It has gone as I want, no problems.

It has 100m of 6mm braid rope, 6m chain, and a Manson Supreme 4.5kg anchor.

One thing I mention - previously I had a drum winch, with a different anchor, that was much lighter in the head and heavier in the shaft. It was hard to control bringing over the bow roller, as it tended to fly up in the air. The Manson is heavy in the head and light shaft, and there's no problem as it is less inclined to fly up.

Another thing - my model Viper doesn't free fall. As it doesn't seem to take very long going down under power, I wouldn't pay extra to get free fall.
