Hi guys

I've been building a big bait board, large enough for kingfish, but I'm having trouble finding a plastic (polyethylene) board to use as the cutting surface, big enough to fit the space I've made for it.

So you know what I'm talking about, I've built the "structure" out of 22mm ply glassed, with drain channels and lip walls on the sides and back. There's also a fancy knife holder, but that's not really relevant :) .

The cutting surface is approx 800mm by 550mm, and I want to fit a plastic chopping board on and silicone it down.

The largest I found was from the warehouse, but its not large enough. It's a little thin and looks like it'll break down quickly in the sun (this will be permanently outside).

Does anyone know where to get a piece of bait board to suit?

That's probably bigger than any standard cutting board you will find.  Save Barn do big industrial ones, but they are only 600 x 400.  I'd suggest finding a plastic fabricator and getting them to cut you a piece of plastic off a sheet.  Cutting boards are usually polypropylene (PP) or low density polyethylene (LDPE) both of which should be fairly easy to find in sheet form.  Maybe someone who makes outdoor plastic stuff would have an off-cut, that should be UV stabilised.

I put a plastic cut down insert in our current bait board..
nice to clean etc but kills the edge on the knives very quick.
Also why havnt used in the kitchen for several decades.
 Should have know better

The previous insert was ply...far better on knives.
Held in place by 4 screws going up from the bottom.

I have the insert cause the front lip of a bait board is a shade too high when filleting etc...
And I leave an inch or so at the rear of the board for sundry sinkers , sb etc to lay in out of the way.

Thanks guys

Dotmar were really helpful and quick to respond. Unfortunately they were a little over budget, but if I make something that requires higher quality I will definitely be using them.

I've ended up using silicone to stick a cheap 600mm by 400mm warehouse baitboard down. That way when it deteriorates in 3 or 4 years I can easily pull it out and replace. It just leaves a little extra flat surface on either side before the drain grooves, but it looks like it'll work well.

Now to go shoot a decent kingie to try it out on.

When I silconed the 1st board in, found didnt stay well attched.. moment, sun  etc..
And I siliconed in lines...this caused even thu didnt sit right down, mould, alge growth under and around the edges..
Sorted to some extent with a spray on gone in 30 sec alage spray.
Then next attempt was countersunk screw washers.. all good.. better gap to wash out with power hose nozzle.. and the gone in 30 to back up
Down side of that is I knew where the counter sunk screw heads $ where unde the bait fish, but others didnt..
Result the cutting top end of the bait knives not just got blunt but rounded / broken off, and took a lot to get that well used section of the blades back before each trip out

So now it self tapping screws from up under the bait board into the  ply / plastic (personal choice) .. thru the insert. Then remove , and cut so the tips of the screws dont go all the way thru... 4 of them... and better cleaning , flushing underneath.

Then later added the draws.. best thing since sliced bread..now 8 screws that also hold them up and 2 in the middle

4x years ago I built mine out of old 10mm custom wood and fibreglassed and gel coated it. Cost about $35 max (2.5hrs). I've reglassed the tray once.it's easy on my knife and easy to resharpen. I may treat myself to a flash Rail blazer one this season. Burnsco $120 inludes 2x star ports

W use one for cooking on ..its mounted horozonallyto the gunnels.. it is not stable enough to cut bait, let alone to turn a fillet in a frying pan. So underneath have a couple custom support legs... works well.
I cant comment on what it would be like to mount with the RBs mounted vertically.
