Our next Raising the Bar seminar is scheduled for Wed 4 July at 7:00 pm here at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre, 3 Solent Street, Mechanics Bay.

These informative seminars are presented by specialists in the following areas:

  • Trip planning
  • Vessel preperation
  • Communication protocols
  • Local area knowledge
These seminars are NOT designed to provide inexperienced boaties with all they need to know to start tackling bars but for those with the experience or who are currently crossing it, the information here and the opportunity to ask questions is a valuable opportunity.

There's no cost to attend - a donation would be nice but registration is required. More information and the ability to book is available  http://www.coastguard.org.nz/information.php?info_id=256&cgnrSid=9ba5bd1a221d29438949b015bd49ed04" rel="nofollow - here

CH18 is working for the harbour bar. Cellphone *500 is often the best way of getting through on the river, not sure what channel does the river

No - our VHF communications are unchanged and certainly in the Northern Region, there's no intention or plans to reduce our VHF network in favour of cellphones.

Thought sounded strange.. Thanks
Waikato  upto a few months back we found when sitting inside the bar there are a few 'dead spots' with VHF. had to communicate by phone to go out.. coming in was good.

Just spoken to the team in the Operations Centre and the other Coastguard VHF channel that works in the Port Waikato area is 02. Otherwise as you say it's cellphone.
