Been fishing at Bayswater marina, just catching small fishes here and there (not schnapper thoug).

Would like to try this area for the first time this weekend.

Any advise what's the best bait and size of hooks to use?

Bought 1 kg of Salty squid, will this be enough?

cheers

It is late in the season for harbour fishing now so you may not catch too much. Still, better than sitting at home. Your most likely 'edible' catch is still going to be a 30cm Snapper or maybe a small Kahawai. Personally I would use circle hooks in the 6/0 size. 1kg of bait should be enough. Squid is OK at this time of year. Make sure that you are down there over the higher part of the tide and preferably over high tide itself if you can. It can get pretty rocky down there at low tide and people often go out to fish off the rock ledge that gets exposed so they can cast into deeper water.

thanks for the info mate.

How about Blockhouse Bay, is there any area in there that allows for fishing? I just live around New Lynn, but I haven't explored the area.

cheers

Can't help you there but 40 years ago I used to surf cast off Pt Chev beach and catch Kahawai over the high tide in summer. If you are going to fish any of the Manakau beaches I would try when there was a high tide at the change of light and use smallish baits on maybe 5/0 circle hooks for Gurnard and maybe Kahawai

Cornwallis Beach has heaps of small bait fish in the shallows ATM. Kahawai have been smashing them. Time of day doesn't seem to matter, but I have been having better luck catching them when the tide is either full or incoming. Definitely a case of cast at your feet.

What's the cheapest type of meat? Dear balls. They're under a buck.

Fun to use a trout spinning/softbait outfit if they are chasing small fish. Cast small silver lures and or softbaits. Wind fast , kahawai like to chase their meals.

Hey ya Riggs

I use to fish around Green Bay / Wattle reserve and catch Snapper, if you jump on google maps and have a good look - we use to go to a few reserves and also there is a few walking tracks that get close to the water around there - if you live in NL I would be prospecting that whole coast line.

Just remember if you catch nothing it doesn't mean there's no fish there try different tides, times and time of year....

You'll even pick up Gurnard if ya find a lucky spot - try find a little channel that runs along one of the banks around there...

You just gotta go out and prospect - be plenty of spots for ya.
