Hi guys. I have a trip to the Three Kings in a couple of weeks and just wanted to get some advice on how best to kit out the gear I already have. Note: we are going on Enchanter and they have gear and tackle but i want to take my rig anyway, at least until something breaks. Reel: JM PE7 PowerSpell Rod: Jig Star Ninja PE4-8 (200-500g Jig) Question: I currently have 80lb braid spooled, however I am wanting to get fresh line before the trip. What should I be looking at (brand and strength)? Jigs: currently I only have premade off the shelf jigs, I am told they may not cut it up there. Therefore it looks like I will be buying and making my own on the boat ride up, figure its a good chance to learn from the crew. Question: i assume I will be needing 500-800g Jigs and if so what brand should I be buying? In respect to the tackle this is what I am looking at buying - Jig Star Double Ring and Grommets - Jig Star Knot Sleeve - Jig Star Split Rings (heavy) - Jig Star Ninja II Jog Hooks 13/0 - Jig Star Kevlar Assist Cord Any help on the above would be much appreciated, and/or any other gear tips. |

Lance will tell you he wants guys fishing with the heaviest braid possible. To quote him "I'd fish with rope if I could"  100lb worked for us. Jig assists are very easy to make, lots of videos around or the guys in the shops should be able to show you. Use 330lb assist cord or similar. I like daiwa boat braid pe10 up there. pe8 at a push for me. |

| Gibs are you only making do with one set? Id try at least get one set for jigging and one set for liveys, so you dont have to change it up and grab a set ready for action as you go. Good luck! |

| I went up last year for the first time. I used 100lb (Pe 8) gosen braid and it did the job. Whatever brand you go with make sure it's metred as the skipper will tell you what depth to drop to. |

We are paying to use the gear on the boat, however I already have this rod and reel so figured I will take it with me. It’s needs to be re-spooled as it’s a couple of seasons old. Just deciding between 100 or 120lb and what brand to go for. Then probably 200lb mono leader. Also keen on advice for Jigs and tackle. |

Went up with Boz on enchanter. We had pe8 daiwa boat braid Lance said should be the heaviest you can fit on the reel i would think Pe10 would be better you can buy bulk spools and share with friends and have some spare. We brought jigs up to 800g i think but barely used any as they were biting baits better so depends on how much spare cash you have, if you want to buy some of the larger jigs let me know i have one not even used 400 - 500g will be sufficient for most of the work up there. Brands are your normal go toos zest, jm, kilwell broken arrows most we use are tail weighted to get down faster and as everyone says make your own assists with the best hooks and cord you can find. Also if you can get them owner split rings and solid rings. We used 150lb fluro and get the best livebait hooks you can find (circles are the go as you will release most of the fish you catch) i actually used big owner circle game hooks and cant remember the circle hooks we used on droppers but the decky Nate tied them up for us. I am guessing considering you are paying to use there gear you might want to check what they will be supplying in the way of terminal tackle as you can rack up the $ very quickly on "possibles" i am sure they will have heaps and also of very good quality Lance does not like losing fish. I would also suggest tying everything before you go if you can. You will no doubt be wanting to watch the lures on the way up and also if the seas are big the easiest way to get sick is to be inside tying rigs! ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">

The only problem with pe 10 and 120 pound braid is there will be a lot of drag on the drop.........the line will catch up in the current.....and they often fish in variable depths up there.......I fished Pe 8 and used 150 pound mono leader......200 pound leader could be good but it will get caught in the current and its hard to tie knots in...... Diawa boat braid and YGK X 8 jigman have been my choices for white island/three kings and Ranfurly banks....Neither have let me down.........I use Jigging master 13/0 monster hooks or tuned Gammakatsu 35/40 with jigstar red assist cord H.......I made all my own assist rigs.....jigs 300 to 500 gram.......800 gram jigs are for people that like induced pain ! and are not necessary.......300 to 500 will cover it all........I have two sets......one as back up.....make sure your new braid is tightly spooled onto the reel by a tackle shop or you will regret it.........get some cheap gardening cloves by westminster from the warehouse.........they will do the job.....protect your fingers from braid cuts and stop you getting your hands sun burned as well.....wear a hat and sunscreen or you will get cooked to death from reflective sun rays....get some split ring pliers....Berkley blue ones will do the job....a cheap plastic gimbal will protect your nuts.....(pin)....one of those Things to cover your face/neck ..BUFF ( i remember now !!!)..forgotten the name........Flouro for live baiting.......some 6 to 8 ounce ball sinkers for live baiting and circle hooks as mentioned.......Do some weights a few days before you go.........It will help........It always did for me........You will need stamina too......Rainbow braid(as those mentioned) means you can drop the skippers depth where he advise there are fish.....pace yourself for the trip.........if you drop to the bottom every time and jig your brains out all the way to the top every time.......you will soon be ****ed !.....Top water can be good up there too......Good luck.....Ps take some ear plugs to deal with those grunty snorers and if you are a pewker....get some phahia bombs and take before you go......They tends to steam overnight whilst you sleep down in the dungeon ! ...I spent the whole night pewking on the way over.......thats why i prefer ranfurly........It a hard ride up there overnight !....so be prepared.

I've got 1/2 of a 1800m spool of metered Diawa Boat Braid PE8 (100lb) if you're interested in buying it. I've spooled a JMPE7, a Stella 20K and a mates Tica Jig reel (prob JMPE5 size) with it, so there must be a good 900m left on it...new. That would re-spool your JMPE7 atleast 2 times, and possibly 3. Was thinking $150 posted. This is what I use at 3 kings & Ranfurly Banks, and never been smashed off

Damn that braid is a good score, I WOULD BE IN BUT NOT PLANNING A TRIP FOR.... Sometime. 13/0 is a good choice, 100lb braid too. 150lb mono is better for trace. Fluoro for liveys. When dropping for Meat hunt get the biggest Blue kohi take a fillet off & that's your two baits sorted. So fillet on 1 hook rest of the kohi on the other..... should attract a 65kg+ monster... A hard drive with movies helps to pass the time... Pliers, they will have those.... Gl to the doctors and ask for a prescription of nauzene with active ingeredient is cyclizine. I nearly gave up fishing as suffered the worst from anyone I know. Pahia bombs were good but always made me very drowsy. He nauzene are unreel haven't felt sick in years now and don't get drowsy from them, definitely worth a try. |

| I have used Sea Leggs in the past but the trick is take one the night before so you can have the active ingredient in your system before hitting the water, then one on the morning of the trip. Taking two made me drowsy. Gingernuts, avoiding coffee and getting a good night sleep all help. Good luck! |

Get takapuna bombs from the pharmacy in takapuna they make thier own and are just as good as paihia bombs in my experience. I have a new 1200m of gosen pe10 braid $250 if you are interested. |

True dat Karl........avoiding Dairy for two days before and whilst out there is a good move as well. I had crunchy nut cornflakes with milk one morning(yummy under normal conditions)...before a mission out on my mates boat...........it was gone within 20 mins..

For a 3 Kings trip you want to deal with the possibility of a massive Kingie or Puka - you don't want to get a good fish and bust off. So take the heavy stuff - I had learnt after a few trips and run 130 pound braid and 220 pound flouro - not busted off after that! Take a couple of big jigs -800gm or more - they get down faster and when the 4-500gm jobs are going out sideways. Make your own assist rigs, but again, there's no prizes for subtlety. You want strong stuff. Its the difference between a trophy fish and a bust off. I think Enchanter had customers break 6 rods on a recent trip, Lance would not be happy with people bringing light gear... their ears will still be ringing

Jigging Master PE7 with 100lb Braid Jigstar Ninja PE 8 Rod 500g Second PE8 jigging Rod Tackle is all highly quality brands (connection bits all 250-350lbs) and will get some tips from th crew around how to rig it all up. Don’t have an 800g jig....however, we are paying to use the boats gear so if my setup isn’t right for a particular session I won’t be forced to use it. If that isn’t good enough, well I guess I won’t use it haha |

just come back mate. 100lb braid is good one guy had 80lb got dusted a few times. I started on 150lb leader and soon learned you need 200lb. |

Lances big mouth lost him a very good deckhand........I wouldnt worry about him........Just worry about the gear you are going to take.......that all sounds about right....although i have used 80 pound ygk jigman x8 and 150 pound mono trace@ both the kings and Ranfurly and i got a 31kg king and a 40kg puka no probs....the flouro will be good for live baiting.....jig range is good as well. ------------- Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens. |

| When you hook a grunter - a >40-kg Kingie or >70kg Puka -thats you want the strong stuff. And if your gear breaks, you will have wasted your money on that trip, and missed the whole thing you went there for. And thats what happens. at >3 grand for a trip its an expensive way to learn. I have had 400gm jigs not get down due to the current, and then switched to the 800gm jigs and been straight down, hooked up and away. Prepare for the worst that might happen. |

I've done 13 jig trips to the 3 Kings, mostly with Lance. all the advice above is exactly what you need. I would still take a couple 800g jigs. ------------- give it death! |

My only recomendation would be to take 200-300lb Fluro trace......150lb does not cut it on the shallower reefs. Rhys was our Skipper on Cova Rose and words alone cannot describe how perfect our trip was! |
