Planning a trip to Marlborough Sounds soon want to take a topwater set just in case.

What are my options around the $500 mark Rod & Reel combo.

Looking at Energy concept PE3-6 + Saragossa 10k?

Judging from the vids Troy Dando and the boys put out of D'Urville etc, looks like you might need some grunty gear!

If you can get that combo for $500 it seems a bargain, particularly as Marine Deals has it for $750, and the reel alone at $400!

Ahead of the experts giving some options, what about a Penn Assassin PE 6-8 ($279 at Marine Deals, has Fuji K Guides and looks nicely put together), and match it with a Daiwa BG6500 (very solidly built and the same stated drag as the Saragosa, but retrieves 123cm per crank - nearly up there with the fastest Stella etc). you can get one from Australia for about NZ$220 landed. There's a nice $500 combo.

With their prices, take off 10% Aussie GST which they do at checkout, add back about $20 for the shipping, and a bit more for the exchange rate (cost x 1.12 at the moment). Anglers Warehouse is very reliable.

incidentally, they have that Saragosa for about NZ$270 landed here, way better than the local prices. You may want to support your local store, fair enough.

Similar threads on here have seen a lot of people recommend the Okuma Azores sets at that price level. The big Fin-Nor Lethal also has devotees on the forum.

I  looked under the Christmas tree and Santa left behind a Shimano Grappler rod and a Gossa 10K, I'm buggered if I know who for but it would be rude not to give it a flick around at some point soon
