Have a couple Shimano Plays 9000 electric reels and to date have been great but the other day one then both of them experienced the same problem, although one came right after a few drops.

The problem was after dropping in 300m and when it came time to wind up the handle would also spin round as if the dog wasn't engaging (that is of course if they have one like conventional reels) and you had to hold it as line was being retrieved. We stopped using one reel only to find that the second one was the same but did come right after some use. Both reels a well washed after each use and drags are loosened when not in use.

Anyone have this happened to them or know what is the cause.

T.T.T
So holding the handle stopped it spinning?
like a seized bearing or something?

It appears as if the anti reverse dog is not engaging but Im unsure if electric reels hsve an anti reverse dog like other reels.

AFAIK They work exactly the same as a conventional star drag reel with regards to drag/anti-reverse.

I'm not sure how the spool shaft disengages from the pinion when retrieving using the electric function, though.

Tzer,
Yes the Plays Electric has same Pinion and yoke design as most conventional reels, so sounds like this one is sticking or jamming then not engaging with drive lugs on spool shaft, may just require a service, also they have a standard design anti reverse dog onto ratchet plate, no Antireverse bearing at all, very basic inside, sure you could DIY lube up of pinion gear on spool shaft, if not then I can help with Service or send back to Shimano NZ . cheers swordfishsteve
