Been giving the stick baits a try out using a Fin nor 9500 until I can afford a better reel, on a kilwell snakeskin but I am getting regular wind knots. Any suggestions on how to stop this?

Could it be too full a spool or ????

yeah over-full spool norm the 1st culprit. Proper casting braid? that can hinder things. I had one set where it was just the rod/reel combination, Nothing I tried worked: reducing spool amount, knot outside guides, new top of the line casting braid....it just continued. I ended up changing reels, and it was solved. I could use that reel on another rod, and it didn't occur, same brand and make rod, difference being rod model, 1st guide was in a slight diff place, due to extra rod length. Very strange occurrence that baffled me for some time.

cheers Structfab, i'll chop some line off and try that first. Otherwise santa might have to bring me a new reel

I had an issue while back when soft baiting and stray lining with braid... different rods and reels and loading spool more and less.. broke about 50m off the main line..reefed.
 After some messing around...
unwound around 50/70m off the end of the rod into the backyard, then back to the tip of the rod, hold briad between 2 fingers  and run down the line, keep the line in front slack with othe hand.
And it started to twist up after 5/10m
Put the end in the drill, fast speed and off the ground back to the rod.. 1 minute... still twisted.. another  then another..3 mins no more twists.. plus one more minute just to make sure
Now no more wind knots, between guides or off the end of the rod.

I used to get periodic wind knots on my soft-bait set-up (using 832). Now I troll the softie behind the boat for 2-3 minutes every 30min of casting to untwist the braid. Now no problems.

Tried that but never seemed to work well.. never took out all the twist.. or close to it.

The best way I know to srt these issues is to drop some line off the back of the boat (assuming you're boat based) when motoring and feed out as much line as you dare. You want NOTHING on the end of the line. With 200m out, there will be plenty of drag to pack things down tight. That will sort things out. As has been said over filling makes things worse as does not enough tension on the line or winding the line on incorrectly

Of course the easiest way to get line twist/wind knots with a spin reel is to wind the handle while the drag is slipping.

OK that would be why I have had trouble getting it to work, did not know that....

thanks for the info. all good stuff!!
I will try both running the braid out the back of the boat next time we are out and reducing the amount on the spool.
I think its just powerpro on it so will upgrade to a casting braid if those don't work.

running the line behind the boat solved it. Plenty of follows from rats at Schooner yesterday and got a big kahawai but nothing of any size yet.

Ju8st5 tpo clarify. Did you not have anything on the end or not.

Note: when it was recommended to me to run the line out behind the boat it was with nothing on it so is probably the best option. I've just found that running it out the back with the lure still attached still helps to remove the twists and kinks.
