Yesterday, I came in to Gulf Harbour ramp during the afternoon, to be met by 20 boats milling around waiting for the ramp to become free. It took a wait of 1.5 hours before I got my boat out.
While I waited, the queue built up to over 30 boats. That's too much waiting for many of them. Some boaties didn't seem to know how to behave in a mature fashion - some trying to jump the queue - some pushing forward so those in front felt they had to go forward to keep their place and try and stay safe from collision, so everyone was unsafe.

Im not saying everyone was acting badly, just a few.
If you know gulf harbour, theres a rock breakwater beside the ramp, which makes a small area available for boats getting near the ramp. Rocks on one side, and stupid boaties on the other.

You know, cant stay in one position, so continually engaging the prop, moving slightly, then the wind blew the boat backwards. One and a half hours of this! Ruined my day.

I saw two collisions, one with rocks.

When I arrived at the ramp in the morning about 9am, I should have known better, trailer parking already over-filled, all the grass beside the marina filled, some parked along the roadway. I should have cancelled or looked somewhere else for a beach launch. I wont make that mistake again.

And that was a Friday, not a public holiday - not yet summer even!.

Theres no sign of the Council doing anything to cater for the huge increase in population that's pouring into Auckland (mostly from overseas). You all know whos to blame for this - the stupid government (that 46% of you voted for, for some unfathomable reason).

To cap it off, my motor played up (in the Boat section) - and fishing was b...y hard, caught 2 snapper just big enough (in the Reports section).

The answer is simple. Tax all boats, say 3% of their value and charge a reasonable fee to launch and park at ACC ramps, say $20. Include a requirement to license all boats and have a marine WOF.

What would that achieve ??????

More money for the government coffers or slush fund, no doubt but that is where it will stay to be spent, as with all the transport levies on various whims of their fancy excluding any added benefits for boaties!

Rather naïve to think otherwise imo.

That wont work. That's peanuts to some people and absolutely no qualification of competency. I should know.Embarrassed

It would shorten the waiting time down to retrieve the boat. It would also employ a bunch of wardens and inspectors. Probably not the direction that a National Govt would head toward even with 46% of the vote.

Support your local boat club ramp.
More support the better their ramps the number the pontoons get

And hassles of boats on the water.. that council or harbour master?

On a club ramp, member gets unruly, pushy, chances they get suspended use of the ramps, or even membership banned.

Many club ramps have anything from live on site custodians,  or ppl on hand to direct, help boats to get thru faster...And generally members help out other to..

"Steps" yes we know which ramp you use, stil no flush out facility, join club and get use of ramp or pay $15? as a casual user.

Yes ramp with facilities probably should come out of rates as not all play rugby etc but to play usually need to join a club, not everyone pays rates.

If there was a annual fee like Aussie,on average they pay $60 depends on state, they have water police, fairly decent ramps from what I have seen. $60 is not a lot of money considering 4 x launches at kkb, have a fairly decent fishery inspectors at work with Bloody frightening fines (no wet bus tickets)

Need  help at sea in NZ and not  a coastguard member very costly, and few do give false details so no chance of cost recovery.

How many private clubs around Auckland with pontoons/wash down facilities ??

It's bad enough in Whangarei over summer, I can only imagine what it's like in Auckland. My last time on a public ramp was really that. I could cope with it being busy, but not with the obnoxious behaviour. Joined the OBC after that. The best value $150/year I spend on fishing/boating by a very long way.

Yep gulf harbour is just a POS on the weekends. Can anyone name a new boat ramp built in Auckland in last 20 years

Why, given the size of the development at Gulf Harbour, didn't they build half a dozen ramps?

I heard a similar story from a work mate who went out in the middle of winter at Gulf Harbour and the queue to launch was out the entrance way and down past the toilet block  - the trailers parked miles away. I winter!

i caught the ferry to work on Friday from Half Moon Bay and it was absolute chaos down there - trailer park full by 7.15 (commuters take up the rest of the parks) and trailers up all the side streets later in the day.

Half the tradies in east Auckland were out fishing. "Sorry, my other job's running over time, I won't be able to make it to your place today!".

Thousands more homes in the Silverdale area, thousands more in Flat Bush towards Manukau. Plenty of those people have boats, all heading to the same old ramps.

Given the incompetence and mis-management of Auckland's growth has been going on for decades to the point we're dumping raw sewage into the harbour every time we have significant rain, I wouldn't hold your breath for better launching facilities!

Not too sure to be honest. I think it's got quite a lot better than it used to be. Perhaps due to better systems and bit of a firmer stance.

last time I was at kkb there was no hose,I can only think of 3 private ramps in Auckland KKB OBC and Maraetai, KKB being closest to bottom end is marvelous set up,almost all tide and pontoons, last time at maraetai was with a member and low tide was not much fun.

The point is if we paid a fee then we can have some say on the matters, you could argue you pay fuel tax so do many others, with the increasing boating numbers there will be a time for a fee/saftey/skipper/ramp users etc and I would suspect its not to far away.

I was in that mayhem at GH ramp on Friday too. I had a queue of 18 boats ahead of me and took 1 hour 20 mins to get out. Big ups to having a Minn Kota electric motor to anchor lock me in the queue. But as letsgettem says there were plenty of idiots that couldn't/wouldn't keep there boats in position and plenty of fend offs and collisions. When I eventually got out there were 33 boats in the queue and judging by the number of parked trailer right down the drive there were a couple of hundred still to come in.

last time I was at kkb there was no hose,...

Havnt been there for 4 or 5 yrs now..
Cant comment..not the ramp WE use.

But was on someone elses boat.. back then.. great set up, ppl helping, parking for members looked good..

When I eventually got out there were 33 boats in the queue and judging by the number of parked trailer right down the drive there were a couple of hundred still to come in.

Watched local ramps where parking goes way up the road..
We reckoned most of the 'back up' was caused by those who need a packed lunch for the hike back to the trailer...waiting boat (s) congesting the ramp... then have to negoiste their way thru the mayhem of traffic at the top of the ramp...

Then there is the other alternative we do on busy days..we see everyone heading home mid arvo.. which we expected and planed for...so rather than waste time in a cue...head home later.

Which often fits in with parking full and big hike... plan to get to the ramp to launch late morning... when the pre dawn early birds are heading back in

jeez, consider myself lucky down here. yes it can be busy in summer at the ramp at weekends, but this sounds on another level!!

I now see why the Boat Parks with launching and storage of trailer boats are doing so well. Such as Gulf Harbour, Orams, Pier 21, Pine Harbour and others.....
Makes my marina berth look cheap.....
No new ramps and less places to launch we will see a lot more trailer boats on the muddy and West Coast this season I predict.
With a broke Auckland Council - over spent everywhere else I do not see any new solutions on the agenda.
My suggestion if local boaties on some of the beaches got together and told the council they wished to build a new ramp and carpark....the Council may jump. But it will take a band of boaties (a new club) in an area to make it happen.

Why cant they?
There are fishing boating clubs with no ramps in near every cossi/ rsa/ working mans (peoples??) club, local pub, around Auckland...
OK most not local to a suitable site.. if that was an issue.
Next is getting enough of those members with a huge commitment over a very long time to get thru the beurocatic nightmare.. and cost, and things like RMA local iwi, objections of the growing new local community who don't want a line of parked trailers...

I dont believe it is so much ACC budget thats the problem, but the huge self servicing, couple 1000   X  $200,000+ salaried no accountability ,  desk jockeys with in it.

One of the big problems is the huge cost added to any project like this by the council.  A while ago I was at a talk by a guy who had helped out with some waka event on the Manukau harbour.  He had constructed an access ramp to get the boats in and out from where the event was held.  It cost very little, less than a couple of thousand.  After the event people wanted it to be left there as it would be useful.  At this point Auckland council got involved, and were very pi$$ed off that he had built it without their permission in the first place.  They sent their engineers out to look at the ramp and I forget how many tens of thousands of dollars they said it would cost to bring it up to "compliance".

Another example is a concrete sea defence wall at a local reserve.  About 18 months ago it got washed out, and Auckland council started looking at repairing it.  So far, and goodness knows how many tens of thousands of dollars already spent, they have talked about it, consulted with the local Iwi, had public information days to show their proposals, talked to the local yacht club, had meetings and now have their final proposal.  This now needs resource consent, which will take several more months.  So, it finally looks like that after two years they might be close to being able to start repairing the wall.  Can you imagine the process you would have to go through to get a boat ramp built?

Yes - thinking about the possibility of new boat ramps. The cost and bureaucratic hurdles would be huge. Second, the parking of trailers is an even bigger problem, as they are big and require a lot of land and/or intrude on street sides.

At Gulf harbour, the available areas for trailer parking, are already grossly inadequate, and have to compete with freedom campers and ferry commuters. Even if a boat ramp expansion was possible, it appears theres no way for parking the trailers. There is a unused area at the end of the reclamation; but the council allowed it to be leased to a private company, that now wants to put houses on it - the outcome of this remains to be seen - boaties should take note and push for this land to retained in public use.

I have looked at Council website for any mention even of the possibility of new boat ramps - not a whisper that I can find. We are being totally ignored. Whereas, Council intends to make new sport fields, and parks for tennis, netball courts etc, all that require large areas for vehicle parking. I suppose, that finding enough land on the coast in a place suitable for boat launching (ie a bay/beach) means extremely expensive land, and in most places there wont be any land left.

We should apply pressure to Council(s) to provide added boat launching facilities. But I suggest, that the only way that will happen would be local boating communities combining forces to fund and build new ramps.

On Whangaparaoa, generally, the boat launching places on beaches appear to have more capacity, as theres no sign of congestion; except trailers parked along streets could be a concern to local residents.

Yep and WE should stand up for rec fishing rights.. and  mid low income wages, espec for teachers, mid wives and other essential , accountable  professional trades that require degrees. List now is endless.

What We "should" and what WE are prepared to do beyond the keyboard is near to zilch.. leaving those who have the balls to do so, out in an isolated wilderness, basically, drowning.

You should be directing this message to Auckland Council and Auckland Council's property development company Panuku Developments. They include all waterfront developments and one of their aims to make the waterfront more accessible to Aucklanders and tourists so that means new ramps and car parks for boaties I would expect.
Itis important to do this right away. Reason the Council is considering what to do with respect to the Americas Cup event coming up in 4 years and local boaties maybe pushed to the back of the queue.

The key messages to deliver is the following;
a) Boat ramps and adjacent car & trailer parking areas are at full capacity.
b) Current experiences.Long queues of boats waiting to launch or recover. Trailer parking is a major problem.
c) Council has not built any new ramps or parking areas in the Auckland region for the past 10 years - maybe longer.
d) Auckland needs new all weather and all tide boat ramps with parking areas on all our harbours, Kaipara, Manukau and Waitemata.
e) Can they detail future plans for the location of new boat ramps?

I think all trailer boaties on this site should write a letter or email to;
1)  Mayor Phil Goff -
c/o Office of the Mayor

Council Building
135 Albert Street
CBD
Auckland

e mail; [email protected]

2) Send a copy to the;

CEOPanuku Developments Ltd                                        PO Box 90 343

We launch from (KKB)  Kawakawa bay a lot. Paid the club fee's, well mate did... We have no issues with that 4-5 boat ramp. Parking can be a little prob during holidays. They have a golf cart to ferry you to & from your wagonThumbs Up Will help you launch & tie up to the pontoons.

They use a REd/Green lolly pop stick to manage the que. Works a treat, always fisheries on hand. Yet people still bring in undersize fish...

Had no issues, we like it... friendly staff....

Im envious. Unfortunately, on Whangaparaoa, there does not appear to be anywhere suitably deep for a new boat ramp with jetty. Plenty of beaches where can launch a boat, but all get very shallow way out over low tide, so the usual difficulties - boat getting stuck, vehicle getting in salt or getting stuck.

I made the mistake of putting my ute too close to the water, and the brakes corroded and locked solid.

OBC at Whangarei is fantastic! But the new rule about two ropes one on the front and one on the end is nuts when its a 12fter LOLLOL (can see the purpose when it gets windy and new to boating people have issues)

Never ran into anyone grumpy, most have a good laugh and a yarn. Only issue I get is that lady in the van trying to do the NIWA research. Doesn't cater for spearos and hounds me every time even though my information is useless as its only designed for bubble blowers and stick holders LOL

I'm guilty of dropping someone off to get the trailer at Tutukaka marina in summer when it is nuts and then getting them to drive to ngunguru or kowharewa bay when the lines just too long. Is that considered jumping the que??

What is the go with the new Boat ramp in Highbrook, East Tamaki, Waiouru Rd,
They have been building it for a while with Pontoons for when launch in or out and also another along the end for waiting I guess. Being industrial seems not bad parking. But when will they finish it and remove the barriers? Looks close to all tide also.

Even Nelson gets crazy at this time of year with the November snapper run.  Even at 6am there can be queues waiting to launch and a bit of niggle too ... impatient people getting frustrated with dis-organised people.

I feel a bit of pressure when retrieving the boat as it sometimes takes me a couple of goes to centre on the trailer correctly.

I often head out of town to an unpopular beach launch site.  20 - 30 minute drive but no queue, no-drama.

Either that or go out super early.

last weekend saw the best weather we have had for ages so off to a ramp north off Dunedin. When I got there it was crazy mayhem rush hour.
Had to wait thirty seconds for the boat on the ramp to launch before I could launch........ then drive off to park among the other half dozen empty trailers.

Madness i say............

A definite advantage of kayak fishing. Every type of vessels has its good point and bad points. If I ever bought another kayak again, I'd be buying a trailer for it as well. Roof topping in strong winds is something I don't miss!
