A friend seems to do quite well with black slow jigs, even in 50 metres of water on overcast days. I'm skeptical, but the results speak for themselves. The jigs do have a lumo belly, and they are out-fishing orange/lumo jigs by 5:1 at the moment. I have a theory as to why they might work, but wondered what experiences/thoughts others have on them.

Are you thinking in terms of contrast MB?

No, but that is a good point. My thought is that the fish can sense something is there (by vibration, water displacement etc), but can't quite see it. This might work to our advantage at times as they might be snapping at the unknown rather than something that they can see and dismiss as a non-food item. As I say, just a thought.

On one particular day a couple years ago i used black and yellow softbaits on a ball and worm hook. I caught 5 fish in the session and everybody else used every possible color on jigheads and got nothing. Im not sure if it was the rig or the color but it was definitely noticable that they liked it. This was the top of the coromandel drifting in 20-40m

black works... along with every other colour. Fish don't care all that much... jigs without paint work just fine too

I don't think snapper are hard to catch or that jig colour matters most of the time, but occasionally they are and it does.

Actually not true I have been to 55m and there was plenty of light.Ouch

A jig maker in the 80's told me (Lethal) their prototypes for testing were just black coloured lead and they worked fine, the only reason they finally were sold as chrome coloured because fishos wouldn't buy them otherwise!LOL

I use a lot of black jigs for kingfish and they seem to work well in 30-50m

Black is by far our slowest selling jig colour. We no longer distribute Black!

I'm not overly convinced about colour or lumo at depth. We very successfully used 800g Deep Slim jigs at 300m at the 3 Kings for Puka and Bass.   These jigs got nailed!   No lumo to be seen on these jigs or terminal gear.
