Kingfish(yellowtail) are abundant in Korea and catching them on poppers are very popular on boats and from the shore though sizes are not as big as in NZ.

But they seldom use stickbait. The most popular lure is medal pencil popper by skipping the surface. But we got on stickbait and poppers when I fished there with Tsurusaki San of FCL LABO.
I can't wait to fish yellowtail on poppers in Korea in Sept.

Beware....when you fish with Enchanter...they dont allow trebles of any kind..........stickbaits are more popular in nz but if they are on......they would probably eat your sock ! ........take some splashy pops....and strong gear !...some back support might help tooWink...Nice pics....love that one with bent stick in the background.

He is Tsurusaki san of FCL LABO. He is one of the best all round jig and pop fishermen I've met among Japanese anglers.

I fished Three Kings on the Cascade in 2005 and 2007.
We jigged on both trips, but it seems popping become popular now.

I got the medal pencil poppers from Korea as we don't have such medal pencil poppers in the US either  I got wahoo and tuna with them.

I think we could do with some of those Black Hole rods in NZ. I don't think they are sold here, but I have seen that they look to be cool rods. I don't know if we've got anything very similar here.

Hi Chris, nice to see you here.
It was 12 years ago when you arranged the Three Kings trip for us.
I like to fish there again before too late as I become 69 years old.
Kingfish don't fight like big tuna, but it is fun to catch on poppers with light tackle.
I am looking forward to catching them on poppers on my next trip.

I thought he was going to have a heart attack ! LOL
Plus i thought maybe he was going on your trip to the kings......so looking out for him......
I have always taken big kings seriously and have done weight sessions before my trips........I wasnt criticizing his skill Tit.....he shouldnt be puffing on rats.

while we were shooting a video of fighting bluefish on a popper in front of UN Building in Manhattan,  Mr Shin pulled the fish so hard and the small bluefish flied over our heads and landed on the othe side of the boat. He did puffing too. :)

Mr Shin is going to go to Oman with me for filming.
I am sure he puffs a lot. All TV fishing hosts are the same.

I observe most angler try to fight too hard for kingfish.
The bigger fish are, the slower you fight.

thats true haha...a lot of them do..Marc berg cries like a baby on a good fish.......they probably dont fish often enough... or are smokers.......unfit.
The only non puffers on nz shows are matt watson(he just cringes and says" Im in Trouble ....im in trouble" )but hes got some grunt for a little fella......Got to give him credit.
The guys off  "Big angry fish" are the best....they dont puff and the one dood benches 1000 pound....so no fish is going to bother him much.LOL
Jokes aside.....It helps if you get some fitness to fight your fish.
Good luck in Oman mate.....I will go there one day and i will be training for at least a month beforehand...ready to do battleWink

GT is a powerful fish, but they give up fighting in 10 minutes mostly.
But big tuna over 100kg is a different story.  I seldom see anyone land 100kg plus tuna on a popping rod on his first try.

WRONG....Go to the gym and do some weights a day or two before you fish and tell me you dont feel like a grunty *******....Its great before Kingfish time.....Ive done plenty of fishing in my time...28 years and counting........In fact i suggest you pass on what i have said......I am seriously concerned for that mans health....Is he a smoker?

Weights a day or two before fishing  isnt going to do anything to improve your strength, in fact the muscles you use will still be recovering, and you will have wasted your time. Building strength and stamina take alot longer than a day or two.....

Proper technique is how small people land big fish.... just stand back and watch a skilled angler,    (looking in the mirror wont cut it) How many fish over 100kilos have you actually landed LBD? Cause the bloke your suggesting needs your advise passed onto himhas caught plenty he is the man behind FCL Labo and many evergreen creations, maybe you should google both these companies, and Tsurusaki San, then youl understand how silly your giving advise to a legend of popping and jigging looks.....

Tsurusaki san of FCL LABO is truely legend. I fished with him for big bluefin on jigs and poppers in Cape Cod, big GT on poppers in Oman and jigging inshore. As I said before, he is one of the best all round anglers I've met. He is the guy who introduced GT to Japan while he stayed in Australia working for Yozuri as a lure designer about 30 years ago. Yozuri Surface Cruiser was his design.

I don't puff while fighting 600 lb giant using 50  - 60 lb drag on 11 oz Black Hole Cape Cod 450g jigging rod. ( I used bait ).Smile

yft on popping rod on the 16 days trip on the Excel.
To fight big tuna, you need to conserve your energy by fishig slow.
Many anglers fight like hell initially and they become out of gas.

Dont care who you are.......what legend you think you are........I couldnt give a **** if you were prince william.........I am merely sharing what works for me......I AM NOT QUESTIONING HOW GOOD AN ANGLER ANYONE IS.......DO YOU UNDERSTAND?...jeeez.
TIT.......I have been doing weights for years a day or two before sessions and i have never struggled with fish.....yes i have never caught a fish over 100kg but that would be with a harness or chair right?....so cant comment there........All my fish are caught without gimbal or harness.......stand up.......
Lance from enchanter noticed how relaxed i was ......when bringing in my 31kg king and my 40 kg puka at Ranfurly.......no gimbal and felt great at the end of the fight..........
Most draining thing was holding the fish up for Photos.....So it works for me Tit and i dont need anybody telling me that it doesnt.....because it has for years.......I have a few mates who do strengthening in their wrists and forearms beforehand....funandfunction for one........Anyone on here seen me having problems catching kings?..Puffing?.....Ive seen some on here ...un fit individuals in all sorts of trouble.... young ens most of em..........being jig fit as well helps..........I am merely sharing what works for me and that is what this forum is all about........Fishing is easier for anyone ...legend or not ....if you are fit for the fight.
PS the idea of harness/back supports/chairs is to make life easier for the angler and secure your gear if i am not mistaken.
THIS ADVICE COMES WITH A BIG DOLLOP OF TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT TOO.Wacko

Those fish in that video are tiny, appreciate it is a different country. But really makes you appreciate how good NZ fishery is. I am partial to cigars and wiskey and sometimes puff when hooked up when jigging.. but on much bigger fish than in that video.
To me smoking or nonsmoking has nothing to do with angler fitness and panting is more about establishing a rythm when playing a fish much like snoring when trying to sleep.
I dont know about legends ... I ve been fishing for kings since i was 4 years old, mainly land based then in small boats. Been pulled off wharfs and even sunk a dinghy playing monsters in my youth. The fish I ve tangled with were giants. Ive done a lot of weights to, used to bench over 140 kg and had biceps the size of tennis balls, but seriously nothing beats good technique and good gear to land big kings.
Tuck the rod butts under your arm pit and fish em like geoff thomas. My omoto 22 posiedon (20 kg of drag) is a big improvement on the old tld 25s and penn senators we used to land monsters on in hauraki gulf off rakino using massive kahawai livies and towing fish out to sea with 15 hp outboards to keep em out of rocks. Legends we were then and we let em go and would never let fish flap on a hot deck like that video. Also get rid of trebble hooks, No excuse now you have inline singles. Poppers always been good on those smaller kings under 30 kg. But why not run singles on them.

True. Will bullet point for you in future Hodder
1 bigger fish cort in NZ which poster did point out
2 legends are in minds eye mostly in your own mind
3 you can damage fish less not using trebble and letting flap around
4 the fishing fitness stuff is personal opinion, but some 80yr olds (sure odd one used to smoke) still land broadbill in this country and dont do too many weights .. so to me is about technique good gear, and something didn't mention knowledge

I am not a  legend and I am extremly uncomfortable to be called as a legend.

For treble hooks, I use treble hooks if I want to catch them.
I lost a big bluefin in NC just because I used single hooks. You don't get many bites a day.

For catch and release, I use single hooks.
I am going to use treble hooks when targeting big Gt on the Oman trip though we release them as you can expect one or two bites a day at most and I need pictures of fighting big GT. Smile

GT rcorder hooks are great, but they are not readily available. I usually use Owner ST-76 hooks or ST-66.

When I use single hooks to release, I use assist hooks.

Get back to the topic and stop the bickering.

The forums are about sharing ideas and while you don't have to agree with everything, it's not that hard to put forward your ideas and thoughts without being confrontational, rude or patronising. It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

Welcome to the forums Kil Song and look forward to more of your posts.

The forums are about sharing ideas and while you don't have to agree with everything, it's not that hard to put forward your ideas and thoughts without being confrontational, rude or patronising. It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

Welcome to the forums Kil Song and look forward to more of your posts.
Thanks.
