Hi,

New boat owner, out on the brine for the first time with HDS Gen 3 + TotalScan transducer, and think I might have an install problem as can't read anything > 50m depth and moving faster than 8-10 knts is hopeless, I enabled a seting to show the bottom and it just looks like a broken scribble my kid would do.

Boat is a Stabi 1850 Supercab.

Current the install has the transducer FLUSH with the hull to starboard of the engine by ~300mm or so.

Speaking with guys from marine shop indicate the install should be lower, with the skimmer below the hull?  With a stabi this should be ok when beached right - as there is a lip on the hull edge?

Appreciate any tech'y advice!

Bit of an update. Found that most of the install photos show transducer below the line of the hull at the front edge of the transducer - with a slight lend upwards towards the rear.  This is definitely lower than where it is at the moment.

The other advice was to just get out waist deep and tune it as it takes a few goes to get it right.  Probably the easiest...  Waitangi weekend coming up so good opportunity.

Every boat and transducer is a little different.

But on mine I've found if I line up the midpoint of the side of the transducer closest to the keel with the bottom of the transom I get good performance.

Ive got a Lowrance Elite 5 HDI with standard transducer. Over 30m it has difficulty detecting the bottom. After checking the position of the transducer, I have concluded the unit is a piece of s**t.
I suggest the problem might not be able to be improved with Lowrance junk.

You may have a transducer setup problem - I have a Lowrance Elite 5 HDI with a standard transducer and can see the bottom @ 50m. I'll admit the 200Hz transducer sometimes loses the bottom over 30m at 20 knots but the 50Hz stays with the bottom, albeit I don't see very much fish sign at that speed/depth. Was cruising around Flat Rock on Sunday and saw fish/bottom to 40+m.

I have a HDS 7 Gen 2 I can see the bottom in hundreds of metres (Airmar P66 trans).

I can read the bottom and mark fish in 75m with a totalscan.
Locks the bottom 20-40m @ 20knots.

Sits about 10mm below hull line.

I have a totalscan transducer and have a good reading of the bottom anything up to 30 knots. i was picking up bait at 23 knots in 30 metres of water yesterday.

Here is a couple of pictures of my total scan transducer on a stabi 1650. As above post it reads well up to 30 knots and probably could be tweaked a bit more to fix that. this is how it was when my boat was delivered and i havn't touched it.

Heres a good link showing what happens to the transducer at speed when not set up correctly and how it should be mounted.
