So I have a Van Staal 802 popper rod, caught my first Kingie on a stickbait with it.
My understanding was that stickbait rods are are softer/ faster action tips, but a non scientific bendy test in my local shop didn't seem to show much difference.
So......having caught Kingie fever, can I just go for it with the Van Staal with poppers & stickbaits, or do I have to mortgage the kids for an expensive stickbait rod?

Reel is a Fin Nor Biscayne 80.

Mate, if it works and you are happy with it, stick with it. If you can work the stick baits so that kings take the lure, then it's half way there - if its got power to stop the kings you are hooking then it's fine for what you are doing. Dont have to go expensive. There's plenty of cheaper gear that I have bonded with and it's done it's job nicely so I don't see a need to pay more. For example I bought a 10-15kg Okuma braid concept rod, 2 piece (I do by the way have some expensive gear), 7'6". $180. It can load about 7-8kg of drag and is a lovely PE3-4 rod. I dont have to spend $500 on a PE4 brand name stickbait rod cause it does a great job... the brand name stick bait rods will be better quality, less likely to snap a tip and handle a bit more drag but I can make it work for me....

So obvious! Fortunately got a Shimano one second hand, more money for stickbaits
