So my old man is starting to dip a toe in the water with regards to replacing his 4.4m Ramco he's owned for the last 20 years or so. It's been a wee ripper of a boat but the time is coming to move it on.

We fish out of Wellington, primarily fairly inshore but we do go out wide occasionally.
His priorities are soft and dry ride, stability.

The biggest condition is that it has to fit in a 6m long garage - a little bit of angle and lowering the outboard permitted but this limits us to right around 5m of boat. The Ramco may only be 4.4m but it has a huge cockpit for a small boat; we comfortably fish 3-up yet a lot of boats around that 4.6 mark (looking at you, Stabi 459) seem to have bugger all space, and we don't really want to go backwards in that regard.

Likely he will buy late model but used.

Options I've identified include:

Surtees 4.7/4.85/4.95 - I think he quite likes the look of these
Frewza F16 Fisher - might have to go new just to get one?
Aqualine? Fugly but I've heard they're great boats

What else do people like in this kinda ballpark?

I have an F16 Frewza and it won't fit in a 6m garage, need around 6.8 with motor down, however it meets all your other wants above.

I would highly recommend a lazer however, the stability part isnt too great when on anchor. I cant measure how long the 520 is on the trailer as I'm not at home. In terms of ride and space you would struggle to find a softer riding alloy boat with that amount of area to fish, 115hp on the 520 would be a lot of fun, probably border-line poop your pants country. Max HP is 115. 90hp gets 38mph on gps with 3 freedivers.

Get a buccaneer 560 fibreglass boat.... period

As general rule you will get less cockpit room in pontoon boat, than a conventional hull of the same overall dimensions.

When planning garage fit have you considered a folding drawbar?

They can save you a foot or more.

Have a look at the Ultimate 18 that is in one of the other posts. 50k brand new with a 4 stroke 90 and Hydraulic steering, Raymarine Dragonfly 7 and King/Queen Seats. Has lots of room and good in the rough.

really! not a 5 metre boat no matter which way you measure them. They are a really small boat compared to say an FC500 and tippy.

490 stabicraft, or new 5 meter equivalent... had one for 16 years and just repowered it with new 60 fourstroke suzuki. Eats the surtees 5.5 and smaller ones of equivalent lenth for breakfast in rough.
Kiwicraft or similar is probably equally good boat.
In 5 meters or less pontoons offer a lot of advantages in terms of stability load carrying and self draining unsinkabily you just dont get in a standard hull.

Rozboon, just get your tape measure out and measure the overall length from back of the engine (down) to the front of the towbar. You will eliminate all the above boats that have not been measured and shorten your list of suitable candidates from there.
Extending a garage is a costly challenge with all the Resource consents required.
My son wanted an F16, but that required a metre longer garage so it had to be an F14.

also keep in mind folding draw bars

I find annoying, how boat lengths are given - not just the hull length but things sticking out, such as bow-sprit at front and boarding platform(s) and motor pod at the back.  When I assess a boat its hull length only, because that's what determines the effective ride and space.
My second gripe, is quoting length in feet, for goodness sake - presumably means the NZ market is less important than the US market. eg my Stabi 1530 is 15feet and .30 feet? what a stupid mishmash. That's  . hull length 4.59m. The hull is actually 4.2m, plus .4m of bowsprit; which has no significance whatsoever.
Manufacturers should have to adopt a standard of hull length only, in metres.
Lastly (thank god you say), I recommend taking no notice of anything said by any owner of a their boat.

If you can, maybe build a enclave in the garage wall at the rear wall for the outboard motor to fit.
Extend the garage door out say 1 metre.
Or buy a boat cover and leave your boat outside.
Though without knowing the layout of your propriety/section makes things tough.

Garage/carport is all streetfront, not ideal having a boat wedged there plus mum would probably divorce him over it ahahha... and then he would have to buy a bigger boat LOL

Surtees 495 is 5990mm with the motor down from the hitch to the very end... which is potentially a smiiiiidgen on the large side. Surtees 485 still looking very appealing, but lots of other options to consider.

As for the Buccaneer suggestion... nice boats, sure, but a lot of the ramps down this way are terrible and would make short work of a shiny fibreglass hull the first time there was a bit of surge and awkward wind. There's a reason just about every fisho down here is in a tinny.

520 lazer is 6450mm with the motor down so probably a bit too long, not sure how the new 516 southern compares in terms of length.

I think you will be very happy with the Surtees if it tics all your boxes. They are great little boats, well built, very seaworthy and I did not find them "tippy" at all. I do not know of any owners who did not like them.

Most boat owners will think their boat is the best thing since sliced bread and good on them - their boats obviously fulfill their needs.

I have been on one of the boats suggested above by it's very enthusiastic owner and I thought it was a pig in the chop compared to the Surtees, but hey, he is happy with it and that's all good!

Lot of puff from your mouth puff? Did you read the post? Limited to 6mtrs and wants valuable fishing room. Neither you can get from a 560 buccaneer, especially the fishing room??? So why would you recommend such a rubbish option to someone with a valid question? Just because you own one doesn't make it right for everyone else.

Great thread! (now to jump on the band wagon) I have just sold my blackdog 4.0 tiller steered as it was a wet ride with anything over 1m chop (very common on west-coast of Auckland). I went for a sea trial of a new surtees 495 with a F70 on the back and to be honest was not overly thrilled. Am dying to get on a frewza f16 to see what all the hype is about but otherwise i'm going for a 4.5 Blackdog cuddy! Stable, half decent ride (not perfect) massive work area and can take a few horses on the back to get out wide faster!

I like the Blackdogs too and think the 4.5 is a serious bit of kit.

Look at boat trailer with hinged tongue then decide on your boat. Need less space to store the boat then.

Was chatting to my local custom trailer man late last year.
I recall him mentioning that he does not favour fold away draw bars.
I did not press him on why he has this opinion.
But he builds trailers for a living,so has his reasons I guess.
My extendable draw bar is a box section in box section set up.
With heavy duty pin and locking lynch pin arrangement.
Very solid.
I had the option of extending my boat shed doors out by about 2` to get the clearance to lock shed doors.

The Provider.
A BDC 4.6 with a 115HP and clears will keep you plenty dry cobber.
I have the 5SS 2013 issue,with a 115 Opti.
Will do around 70KM at 5800RPM or WoT.
Great piece of kit.
I think the new models have been altered to take heavier engines these days.
Sorry about hi-jack.
Choose the grungiest tyres for your investment.
Then build up from the rubber.
Never go cheap on boat trailer tyres, false economy.Ouch
