Good stuff Scott. We need a vision and passion for our fisheries. The same vision and insight that i saw personally from Scott and others in the early days of option 4. We have all noticed decline in snapper in Sn1,no question. Spoke with a man yesterday at the ramp. He was from the South of France,now living here. Said he had noticed a major decline in the last 3-4 years,just like others have. But still good compared to the Med where in his words there are few fish left. Looked out across the waters yesterday,all the way to the horizon and realised how little i really know about my own fishery ,and about the only planet i will ever live on. We live in a time where we cannot afford the luxury of waste in our fishery ,or the luxury of not understanding enough about it. So very true that fresh fish is a vital part of the diet of all healthy peoples . And for that reason the generational right to be able to gather seafood on a recreational basis needs to be protected at all costs. Literally lives depend on it. Our son and a Korean friend went to the fish markets last weekend to buy some fish. They both love fish. She said they looked and looked and nothing was fresh enough to buy. They left with nothing. Son said the place stunk of off fish and was a disgrace. He has grown up on home caught fish and can now only eat home caught. She also agrees after eating my fish. Both have been to the Tokyo fish markets which they say are amazing ,in both variety ,quality and freshness. Their experience at Auckland fish markets shows the poor regard for quality fish in N.Z,and that is an indictment on our society. Ironic that the freshest N.Z fish i see is in fish retailers off shore. What does that say.! We mostly get the stale leftovers. |
