Hi mate

Suggest you buy either the spot x maps or books as they detail a heap of easily accessible landbased spots around the coromandel region

Good luck!

It depends on which way the wind is blowing as to which place go.
The west side around Papa Aroha or Anglers Lodge can normally take you out and drop you off on an Island which would probably be a better bet. Just need plenty of burley.
When are you coming over

Heading over on the 10th of december and staying for just over 10 days however ill be going to probably 3 different places including if i can find one a place that is close to a trout stream, but the main focus is getting my first kingy as ive invested in the gear and i have even had a failed trip to lord howe island earlier this year that blew constant 40 knots

Damn looks like there is so much coastline to fish, anywhere there is rocks and reef there could be kingys

Check out some older seasons of our TV programme Big Angry Fish online - in several episodes they fish in innocuous looking spots all along that coast for kingies, in just 3-4m. They say the secret is berley (lots of it) to bring in the baitfish, and finding a sheltered spot inside a point with clear, calm water. Fish livies along the weed lines and the kingies cruise by.

Check out the video on the popper and stickbait thread on this site, a stick bait exponent hooking two horse kingies off the very tip of Coromandel peninsula. Rugged place, big fish. If the westerlies are blowing, drive over to the other side as one of the earlier posters said, and it's sheltered.
Enjoy planning your visit.

Great show big angry fish definitely my favourite fishing show haha, back home where the current is the fish are.ill definitely keep that in mind thanks. Now a bit off topic would you guys be able to tell me anything about a good charter for kings for a day trip might do two charters aswell

I would suggest you spend a few days at Anglers Lodge in Amodeo Bay and make use of their rockhopper taxi service out to the near by islands. 2 or 3 days of this should give you a good chance of a landbased king and at least a few snapper.

If you want to go on a charter, you could try Epic over in Tairua on the east coast. There are a couple of landbased spots near there you could walk too with the chance of the king but not the best.

Will you have a hire car??

Epic also has a charter boat running out of Anglers lodge. They can take you up around Coro coastline to target Kings. I think they also offer landbased trips as well.

1 thing that is for sure, you will find fishing up the coromandel a touch different to fishing in PPB!

Hi Liam, not sure if you saw my comment but will you have a hire car or anything?

Depending on dates I may be able to join you for a rock session. A few years back when a member Kurt was over from Oz we planned a day and it worked out real well with him landing a nice landbased king and I picked up a decent snap of about 6kg too during the session.

if you stay at Anglers lodge, its only a 150 meter walk to a good spot and about 2 kms to a great spot.
Keep in touch as I can tell you more about them closer to the time. You will need to start booking though.
Papa Aroha has a good Island hopping service as well

Sounds good ive previously stayed at a light house on the nsw east coast that had a lbg ledge just under 4km from where i was staying so no problem in walking a few kilometres if it put you onto a nice rock platform. Over in victoria often the best time for land based fishing is when strong onshore winds are blowing bait in, does that apply to nz? Or do you reccomend the big angry fish method of sheltered quiet coves for best results.

Also ive got two 15kg setups aswell as some light gear for fun but would a shimano tld 25 filled with 24kg mono and mounted on a 24kg short OH rod be heavy enough for livebaiting kings on the rocks?

Yes in general that will do you fine gear wise.

Re the winds, doesnt seem to apply here, well not that I've noticed. Key is really current lines and tides and of course having a line in the water.  South and south east winds (which are cooler) can make things a bit hard but still caught decent fish in these conditions up there. Just not as much fun!

Thanks for the help, i was worried that some people love the tlds and some say that the 25s frame risks breaking on 50pd line because i just dont jave the budget for a tyrnos 2 speed at the moment.sounds like the best thing you can do is put money into burley logs

I tore the frame apart on a TLD 25 and Shimano told me that 25 indicated 25lb, 15 indicates 15lb and a TLD 50 is 50lb. I guess that its great to have the extra line weight as you can always set the drag lighter but have the power if needed

Do you have any reccomendations for an OH reel to fill with 50pd mono under 200$?

personally I dont (other may do) as most reels strong enough for 24kg are either larger or more expensive.
Often 2nd had can be very good but as mentioned a lot larger.
I tend to fish with smaller lighter gear but I rarely target Kings now days (plus most of my fishing is off my boat.
As mentioed, keep in touch as I will have to go to Coromandel at least once in December before Christmas to mow the lawns so may be able to bring the boat down if time and winds allow for it

Ive got some good gear but nothing big ive got a shimano biomaster 8000pg but that will only hold braid and i know what happens to braid on rocks, ive also got an okuma cortez which is graphite but much sturdier and more compact than a tld better drag too but small, i have tried putting a topshot of 50pound mono approx 50m ontop of 250 m of 45lb braid that might have to do, its currently mounted on a 15kg snapper rod but i could buy a cheap shimano beastmaster 24kg for it to go on until i can afford a tyrnos. Would love to come for a fish if it all comes together aswell.

The beast master was the forerunner to the TLD 50 I think.
Novembar/December are my 2 busiest months so theres no promises but will see if I can OK

I mean the beats master 24 kg rod not the reel

Your TLD25 will be fine mate. Fish sensible drags and you should have no problem. Given you are only 16 I'd guess you probably aren't a huge unit so would probably struggle to handle a drag setting heavy enough to wreck the reel.

Heaps of people fish TLD25s wih 24kg line and sure you will be undergunned if you happen to hook that fish off a lifetime but plenty of good kingfish have been landed with that combo.

Thanks for the help, definitely am no big unit haha my 60pd jig rod i can only just use that to its full potential for 15mins on a big ray. But thanks for the help ive got a cheap fiberglass sambo 15kg to 24kg rod i found that ingot for free when dad bought our new boat which is nothing special but it has a steel reel seat and ive tested dead lift and feels fine ill have to save up some money for burley bombs aswell and potentially a few rock hopper services

Have heard anything about the penn squall? They come in a 60 size and very similair price, the look a little beefier aswell.
