Well it`s nearly that time of the year again, off to the lake, for an adrenaline rush, stalking the very vocal stags of Waikaremoana, and to rest the old bones for a few hrs , dangling a wet fly for the every present trout population. Well thats how it was last year, a quick reccy up their last week showed plenty of donkey`s about , but fish were conspicuous thru there absence. and the general word was they have been for sumtime. as a wild fishery, no.s of spawning fish have a direct impact on population. It maybe coincedental that fish and game did an indepth survey up their last summer, and the fact that juvenile fish are very scarce indeed. Is this fishery being overfished? I am hoping for a reply from mailto:F@G">F@G with the results from that survey to see if it confirms my theory.

what species of deer inhabit Waikaremoana, Hoot?....Please keep us informed as to your findings about the trout populations as well....interesting stuff!...could it be that a high percentage of fingerlings are being canabalised?

Yes Kerran, red deer, only up there. Not uncommen at all to see deer on the lake edge esp, early morning. interesting u mentioned (canabilism) a facter i totaly over looked! yes will keep all informed of any update from mailto:F@G">F@G  Hoot

How did you get on with the stick heads Hoot , I am heading down thata way to have a snoop around in a little while . maybe up the waiau , went there last year and got onto them , heaps of trout aswell . some biggies too.

Was fishing the log pool at Lake Okataina(Rotorua) the other night and a big stag was roaring his head off for a good hour right up behind us.Too bloody steep them cliffs though.Am taking my Mountain goat mate out there on Sunday to see if he`s keen to have a go at the Cliffs.Be an easy carry out though.

You guys may know him as LipRipper!

He`s so far scored a few pigs and landed a few trout,but the Stags are giving him a bit of a hard time thus far.

He`s then heading up to kari Kari to chase the "Sticky Beaks"up there,and then Kings and Snaps.Hopefully get time off to go with him.

Good luck up the Park boys.Have`nt been to Waikaremoana for yonks.

The last time there 3 deer ran across the road just by the Ranger Station(Typical of that place ay?)

Why not try the Tuai River for some of those legendary Browns?

They are one scarey Trout in there.
